예수병원과 의학박물관

전주 예수병원은 1898년 미국 남장로교 여의사 마티 잉골드(Mattie Ingold)가 시작한 호남 최초의 서양식 병원으로, 지금도 기독의료기관으로 이어져 120년 넘게 환자를 돌보고 있다. 한 여성 의료선교사가 초가집 한 칸에서 시작한 작은 진료가, 오늘날 호남을 대표하는 종합병원으로 자라났다는 사실은 놀랍기 그지없다. 이는 병든 자를 고치고 복음을 전하라는 주님의 파송 명령이 이 땅에서 맺은 살아 있는 열매다. 여성이 의사가 되는 일조차 드물던 시절, 잉골드는 이역만리 조선에 와서 특히 남성 의원을 찾기 어려웠던 여성 환자들을 돌보며 몸과 영혼을 함께 치유했다. 병원 안에 자리한 의학박물관은 초기의 소박한 진료 기구들과 의료선교의 역사를 전시하고 있어, 이 병원이 어떤 정신 위에 세워졌는지를 잘 보여 준다. 또한 병원 뒤 언덕에는 호남 선교에 생을 바친 선교사들이 잠든 묘역이 함께 있어, 치유의 사역과 그 값진 헌신을 함께 되새길 수 있다. 박물관에서 잉골드의 초기 진료 이야기를 찾아보고, 묘역까지 천천히 걸어 올라가 보길 권한다.

Jesus Hospital in Jeonju, begun in 1898 by Dr. Mattie Ingold of the Southern Presbyterian mission, was the first Western hospital in Honam and still serves as a Christian medical institution today, having cared for the sick for over 120 years. It is astonishing that a small clinic one woman doctor began in a single thatched room has grown into a general hospital representing all of Honam — a living fruit of the Lord's commission to heal the sick and preach the gospel. In an era when it was rare even for a woman to be a physician, Ingold came across the world to Korea and cared especially for women patients, who could seldom find a male doctor, healing body and soul together. The medical museum inside the hospital displays the plain instruments of those early days and the history of medical mission, showing well the spirit on which the hospital was built. On the hill behind lies the cemetery where missionaries who gave their lives to Honam rest, letting one remember the healing ministry and its costly devotion together.
