여리고(텔 에스술탄)

1만 년에 이르는 정착사를 지닌, 세계에서 가장 오래된 도시 중 하나로 꼽히는 여리고의 발굴 언덕(텔 에스술탄)으로, 해수면보다 250m 이상 낮은 세계에서 가장 낮은 도시이기도 하다. 기원전 8천 년경 신석기 시대의 석탑과 성벽 유구가 드러나 있으며, 1950년대 캐슬린 케니언의 발굴로 고고학사에 획을 그었고 2023년 유네스코 세계유산으로 지정되었다. 이곳은 여호수아 6장에서 이스라엘이 언약궤를 앞세워 이레 동안 돌자 성벽이 무너진 가나안 정복의 첫 성이며, 히브리서는 이를 '믿음으로 칠 일 동안 여리고를 도니 성이 무너졌다'고 증언한다(히 11:30). 언덕 발치에서는 엘리사가 소금으로 고친 샘(왕하 2:19-22)이 지금도 솟아 여리고의 풍성한 오아시스를 적신다. 신약에서도 여리고는 삭개오가 뽕나무에 올라 예수님을 만나고(눅 19장) 소경 바디매오가 눈을 뜬(막 10:46-52) 은혜의 무대였다. 시내에는 삭개오의 뽕나무로 전해지는 노거수가 서 있고, 케이블카로 오를 수 있는 시험산 절벽에는 예수님의 40일 금식과 시험을 기념하는 그리스 정교회 수도원이 제비집처럼 붙어 있다. 구약의 정복과 신약의 구원 이야기가 한 언덕에 겹겹이 쌓인, 성경 지리의 압축판 같은 곳이다.
Jericho (Tell es-Sultan) — Area A
Tell es-Sultan, with some ten thousand years of settlement and a Neolithic tower from around 8000 BC, marks ancient Jericho — one of the oldest cities on earth, the lowest city in the world, and a UNESCO site since 2023, made famous archaeologically by Kathleen Kenyon's excavations. Here the walls fell before Joshua after Israel circled the city seven days behind the ark, a victory Hebrews attributes to faith (Hebrews 11:30). At the foot of the mound still flows the spring Elisha healed with salt (2 Kings 2), watering Jericho's oasis, and in Jesus' day Zacchaeus climbed his sycamore and blind Bartimaeus received his sight here. A cable car climbs toward the Mount of Temptation, where a Greek Orthodox monastery clings to the cliff commemorating Jesus' forty-day fast. Few places layer Old and New Testament stories so densely on a single mound.
