전주 선교사묘역

전주 선교사묘역은 예수병원 뒤 언덕에 자리한 묘역으로, 호남 선교에 헌신하다 이 땅에서 생을 마친 선교사들과 그 가족들이 잠들어 있다. 이곳에 새겨진 이름들 가운데 특히 마음을 아리게 하는 것은, 전킨(William Junkin) 선교사 부부가 이 땅에서 잃은 어린 자녀들의 작은 묘비다. 전킨 부부는 낯선 풍토와 질병 속에서 어린 아들 여럿을 연이어 잃는 참척의 고통을 겪으면서도, 선교지를 떠나지 않고 끝까지 이 땅의 영혼들을 위해 남았다. 그 작은 묘비들은 복음을 위해 치러진 가장 아프고 값진 대가를 말없이 증언한다. 서울에 선교사들이 잠든 양화진이 있다면, 이곳 전주의 묘역은 호남 선교의 희생을 간직한 또 하나의 골고다 언덕이라 할 만하다. 짧은 생몰 연대가 새겨진 아이들의 작은 묘비 앞에 서면, 자식을 앞세우고도 사명을 붙든 선교사 가정의 눈물과 믿음이 조용히 가슴에 사무친다. 그 앞에서 잠시 걸음을 멈추고, 오늘 우리의 신앙이 어떤 희생 위에 서 있는지 묵상해 보라.
Jeonju Missionary Cemetery — Jeonbuk Wansan-gu
The Jeonju Missionary Cemetery lies on the hill behind Jesus Hospital, where missionaries who gave themselves to Honam and ended their days in this land rest with their families. Among the names carved here, the ones that most pierce the heart are the small headstones of the young children the missionary couple William and Mary Junkin lost in this land. Enduring the anguish of burying several young sons in succession amid unfamiliar climate and disease, the Junkins did not leave the field but stayed to the end for the souls of this soil. Those little headstones silently testify to the most painful and costly price paid for the gospel. If Seoul has Yanghwajin where missionaries rest, this Jeonju cemetery is another Golgotha hill holding the sacrifice of Honam mission. Standing before the children's small graves, with their brief dates of birth and death, the tears and faith of missionary homes who buried their own and held to their calling quietly sink into the heart. Pause there a while and reflect on what sacrifice today's faith rests upon.
