전동성당

전동성당은 한국 최초의 순교자 윤지충과 권상연이 1791년 처형된 전주 풍남문 밖 순교 터에 세워진 성당으로, 프랑스인 보두네 신부가 건립을 주도해 1914년 완공되었다. 윤지충과 권상연은 제사 문제로 신앙 양심을 지키다 이곳에서 목숨을 잃은 이들로, 이 자리는 곧 한국 천주교 순교사의 첫 페이지가 기록된 땅이다. 순교의 피가 뿌려진 바로 그 자리에 이토록 아름다운 예배의 집이 세워진 것은, 죽음이 신앙의 끝이 아니라 도리어 씨앗이었음을 돌과 벽돌로 증언하는 셈이다. 성당은 로마네스크 양식에 비잔틴풍의 우아한 종탑을 더한 걸작으로 국가 사적으로 지정되어 있으며, 호남 지역에서 가장 아름다운 근대 건축물로 손꼽힌다. 순교자들이 흘린 피 위에 세워진 이 성전은, 한 알의 밀알이 땅에 떨어져 죽어 많은 열매를 맺는다는 복음의 진리를 눈으로 보여 준다. 전주 한옥마을과 마주한 위치 덕분에, 경기전의 오랜 돌담과 붉은 성당이 한 프레임에 담기는 아름다운 풍경을 놓치지 말라.
Jeondong Catholic Church — Jeonbuk Wansan-gu
Jeondong Cathedral rises on the execution ground outside Pungnammun Gate in Jeonju, where Korea's first martyrs, Yun Ji-chung and Gwon Sang-yeon, were put to death in 1791; the French Father Baudounet led its building to completion in 1914. Yun and Gwon lost their lives here for keeping the conscience of their faith over the question of ancestral rites, so this ground is the first page in the history of Korean Catholic martyrdom. That so beautiful a house of worship was raised on the very spot where martyr's blood was shed testifies in stone and brick that death was not the end of faith but its seed. A designated national historic site, the cathedral is a masterpiece blending Romanesque forms with an elegant Byzantine bell tower, and is often called the most beautiful modern building in Honam. Built upon the blood of martyrs, it shows to the eye the gospel truth that a grain of wheat, fallen and dead, bears much fruit. Set across from Jeonju's Hanok Village, do not miss the lovely view where the old stone wall of Gyeonggijeon and the red cathedral frame together.
