산 라파엘 카르멘 바호 수도원 성당

인디펜덴시아 대로에 있는 이 수도원 성당은 1766년 카를로스 3세의 왕실 허가를 받아 설립이 추진되었고, 코레히도르 루이스 마누엘 사냐르투가 자신의 두 딸을 위해 재정을 대며 1770년 무렵 맨발의 가르멜회 수녀원으로 문을 열었다. 1783년 마포초 강이 크게 범람해 건물 기초까지 물에 잠겼을 때, 전해지는 이야기로는 고통의 성모상이 물 위에 떠올라 무사했다는 전승이 오늘날까지 신자들 사이에 전해진다. 이후에도 수녀원은 큰 손상 없이 자리를 지켰고, 1958년 수녀들이 라 레이나로 옮겨갈 때까지 거의 이백 년 가까이 봉쇄 수녀원으로 운영되었다. 소박한 식민지 양식의 정면과 내부의 목조 성가대석은 당시 여성 수도 공동체의 생활을 짐작하게 하며, 안뜰 한쪽에는 옛 우물과 회랑의 흔적도 일부 남아 있다. 1983년 11월 24일 국가 사적으로 지정되었으며, 현재는 산티아고 대교구 북부 관구청 소재지로 쓰이고 있다. 방문 팁: 일반 관람보다 관구청 업무 시간에 맞춰 방문해야 내부 출입이 가능한 경우가 많으니 미리 문의하는 편이 좋다.
Iglesia del Monasterio del Carmen Bajo de San Rafael — Santiago
This monastery church on Avenida Independencia began with royal authorization from Charles III in 1766; corregidor Luis Manuel Zañartu financed it for his two daughters, and the Discalced Carmelite convent opened around 1770. When the Mapocho River flooded severely in 1783, submerging the building's foundations, tradition holds that an image of the Sorrowful Virgin was found floating unharmed—a story still told among the faithful today. The convent survived largely intact and functioned as an enclosed community for nearly two centuries, until the nuns relocated to La Reina in 1958. Its plain colonial facade and wooden choir stalls hint at the daily life of the women's religious community once housed here. Declared a National Monument on November 24, 1983, it now serves as the seat of the Archdiocese's Northern Episcopal Vicariate. Visitor tip: access is often easiest during the vicariate's office hours, so call ahead before visiting.
