황사평성지
황사평성지는 1901년 신축교안(이재수의 난) 때 희생된 천주교 신자들이 안장된 묘역 성지다. 당시 봉세관의 가혹한 세금 징수와 외세에 대한 반감, 토착 신앙과의 갈등이 뒤얽힌 민란 속에서 수백 명의 신자가 관덕정 일대에서 목숨을 잃었다. 사건 수습 과정에서 조정과의 교섭을 통해 황사평 일대의 땅이 교회에 양도되었고, 흩어져 있던 희생자들의 유해가 이곳에 옮겨져 합장되면서 황사평은 제주 교회의 첫 순교자 묘역이 되었다. 제주 교회는 이 아픈 역사를 두고 지역 사회와 오랜 화해의 과정을 거쳐 왔으며, 황사평은 그 기억과 화해를 증언하는 장소가 되었다. 오늘날 이곳은 잘 가꾸어진 소나무 숲과 잔디 묘역으로 단장되어 제주교구의 공동묘역이자 순례지로 순례자들을 맞는다. 복음이 낯선 땅에 들어올 때 겪는 갈등과 오해, 그리고 용서와 화해의 긴 여정을 보여주는 곳으로, 개신교 순례자에게도 교회와 지역 공동체의 관계를 성찰하게 한다. 묘역 사이를 걸으며 갈등의 역사 위에 피어난 화해의 열매를, 그리고 '심는 대로 거두는' 평화의 씨앗을 묵상해 보자.
Hwangsapyeong Holy Site — Jeju Jeju
Hwangsapyeong is the cemetery shrine where Catholic victims of the 1901 Jeju uprising were laid to rest, after a revolt entangled with harsh tax collection, anti-foreign sentiment, and religious friction claimed hundreds of believers' lives near Gwandeokjeong. In the settlement that followed, this land was granted to the church and the scattered remains were gathered here in a common burial, making Hwangsapyeong the first martyrs' cemetery of the Jeju church. The site has since become a place of remembrance and of the long reconciliation between the church and the island community, its pine groves and lawns now welcoming pilgrims. Walking the peaceful grounds, one is invited to reflect on the conflicts that can accompany the gospel's arrival—and on the slow, patient work of peacemaking.
