보덴 호숫가의 도시 콘스탄츠에는, 종교개혁보다 한 세기 앞서 진리를 위해 목숨을 바친 보헤미아의 개혁자 얀 후스를 기리는 기념관이 있다. 프라하 대학의 총장이자 설교자였던 후스는 성경을 최고 권위로 삼아 교회의 부패와 면벌부를 비판하고 백성의 언어로 설교했는데, 이는 그가 존경하던 영국의 존 위클리프의 사상을 이어받은 것이었다. 그는 1414년 자신의 견해를 변론하기 위해 콘스탄츠 공의회에 소환되었고, 지그문트 황제가 안전 통행을 보장했음에도 도착 직후 체포되어 감옥에 갇혔다. 여러 차례 신념을 철회하라는 요구를 받았으나 후스는 성경으로 자신의 오류를 증명해 달라며 끝내 거부했고, 1415년 7월 6일 이단으로 정죄되어 화형당했다. 그의 재는 다시 숭배되지 못하도록 라인강에 뿌려졌다. Hus Museum, Konstanz — Landkreis Konstanz
In the lakeside city of Konstanz stands a museum honoring Jan Hus, the Bohemian reformer who gave his life for the truth a century before the Reformation. Rector of Prague University and a preacher, Hus held Scripture as the supreme authority, condemned church corruption and indulgences, and preached in the people's language, carrying forward the ideas of the Englishman John Wycliffe whom he admired. Summoned to the Council of Constance in 1414 to defend his views, he was arrested and imprisoned soon after arriving, despite Emperor Sigismund's guarantee of safe conduct. Repeatedly ordered to recant, Hus refused unless shown his error from Scripture, and on 6 July 1415 he was condemned as a heretic and burned at the stake, his ashes scattered in the Rhine so they could not be venerated. His conviction that 'truth prevails' did not end in death but blazed up in the Bohemian Hussite movement, and a century later Luther declared, 'We are all Hussites.' The site reminds us that the Reformation did not begin suddenly one day in 1517, but rested on the witness of forerunners who fell for the truth.
