Hospital/Convent of San Marcos — León
San Marcos in León began as a hospital and monastery founded in the 12th century by the Order of Santiago to care for pilgrims. Its 16th-century facade, covered in silversmith-like carving, is a masterpiece of Spanish Plateresque, over 100 metres of saints and heroes in relief. Pilgrims who fell sick or weary on the road to Santiago found care and rest here. Today most of the building is a state Parador hotel, yet the attached church and museum keep alive the spirit of welcome. On the square a sculpture of a weary pilgrim resting at the foot of a cross comforts the traveller. For Protestant pilgrims it testifies to the diakonia of a faith community caring for the sick and weary. Tip: the facade is free to admire; the museum and cloister are ticketed. Rest by the pilgrim statue.
