홍주순교성지
홍주순교성지는 1791년 신해박해부터 1869년 무렵까지 홍주읍성 일대에서 200명이 넘는 천주교 신자가 순교한, 한국 교회에서 두 번째로 많은 순교자를 낸 순교의 터다. 내포 지역 신앙과 행정의 중심지였던 홍주에는 신자들을 가두었던 감옥터, 조리돌림을 당하며 끌려다닌 저잣거리, 목이 베인 참수터, 산 채로 묻힌 생매장터 등 순교 사적이 읍성 안팎 곳곳에 흩어져 있어, 도심 전체가 하나의 순례길을 이룬다. 특히 원시장 베드로는 혹독한 겨울날 옷을 벗기운 채 찬물을 뒤집어쓰고 얼어 죽는 이른바 동사형으로 순교했다고 전해져, 이 땅의 박해가 얼마나 잔혹했는지를 증언한다. 순교자들의 신분은 대부분 이름난 지도자가 아니라 농사짓고 장사하던 평범한 백성들이었으니, 이곳의 순교는 특별한 영웅이 아니라 보통 신자들의 이야기였음을 일깨운다. 사람들이 오가던 일상의 거리 한복판에서 믿음 때문에 끌려다니고 죽어간 그들의 자취는, 신앙이 삶의 자리에서 시험받고 지켜졌음을 보여준다. 지금은 순교탑과 기념 성당이 세워져 있고, 홍주성 안팎의 순교 사적마다 표지가 놓여 있어 걸으며 그날을 떠올릴 수 있다. 홍주성 안 순교 사적 표지를 따라 도심을 천천히 걷는 도보 순례 코스를 추천한다.
Hongju Martyrs' Shrine — Chungnam Hongseong-gun
Over two hundred Catholics were martyred in and around Hongju Fortress between 1791 and about 1869, making it the second-greatest martyrdom site of the Korean church. As the administrative and religious center of the Naepo region, Hongju holds sites scattered through the old town — the prison, the marketplace where believers were paraded in disgrace, the beheading ground, and the live-burial site — so that the whole district forms a single pilgrimage route. Won Si-jang (Peter) is said to have been martyred by being stripped and doused with water on a bitter winter day until he froze to death, a witness to how brutal the persecution was. Most of the martyrs were ordinary farmers and merchants, not famous leaders, a reminder that martyrdom here was the story of common believers tested and faithful in the midst of everyday streets. Following the marked walking course through the fortress is the best way to take it in.
