히에라볼리(파묵칼레)

히에라볼리는 바울이 골로새서 4장 13절에서 라오디게아·골로새와 함께 언급한 리쿠스 계곡의 세 도시 중 하나로, 눈처럼 하얀 석회붕 온천 지형 파묵칼레(터키어로 '목화의 성') 위에 자리한 유네스코 세계유산이다. 지하에서 솟는 따뜻한 광천수가 언덕을 타고 흘러내리며 만들어 낸 새하얀 계단식 온천 못은 고대부터 치유의 성지로 여겨져 순례자와 병자들이 몰려들었다. 골로새서는 이곳의 에바브라가 라오디게아·히에라볼리·골로새 세 도시의 교회를 위해 수고했다고 전하니, 바울이 직접 밟지 않은 이 도시에도 일찍이 복음이 뿌리내린 것이다. 언덕 위에는 사도 빌립이 이곳에서 순교했다는 오랜 전승을 기념해 5세기에 세워진 팔각형의 마르티리움(순교기념당) 유적이 남아 있고, 2011년에는 그 인근에서 빌립의 무덤으로 추정되는 유구가 발굴되어 학계의 주목을 받았다. 15,000명을 수용하던 웅장한 대극장과, 죽음을 앞둔 이들이 치유를 바라며 찾아와 형성된 아나톨리아 최대 규모의 네크로폴리스(고대 묘지)도 장관을 이룬다. 온천 관광지의 화려함 너머에서 초대교회 증인의 발자취를 더듬는 것이 이 순례의 묘미다. 마르티리움까지 오르는 언덕길에서 계곡 건너 라오디게아 방향을 조망할 수 있다.
Hierapolis (Pamukkale) — Pamukkale
Hierapolis, one of the three cities of the Lycus valley Paul names in Colossians 4:13 alongside Laodicea and Colossae, sits atop the dazzling white travertine terraces of Pamukkale — Turkish for 'cotton castle' — a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Warm mineral springs welling up from below and cascading over the hill formed these gleaming stepped pools, revered from antiquity as a place of healing that drew pilgrims and the sick. Colossians tells that Epaphras of this region labored for the churches of all three cities, so the gospel took root early even here, in a city Paul never trod. On the hillside stand the ruins of a fifth-century octagonal Martyrium built to honor the tradition that the Apostle Philip was martyred here — excavations in 2011 identified what may be his tomb nearby, drawing scholarly attention. The grand theater seating 15,000 and Anatolia's largest necropolis, formed by the dying who came seeking healing, are also spectacular. The delight of this pilgrimage is to trace the footsteps of the early church's witnesses beyond the splendor of a spa resort; the climb to the Martyrium offers views across the valley toward Laodicea.
