합덕성당

합덕성당은 1890년 설립된 충남 최초기 본당의 후신으로, 처음 예산 양촌에서 시작된 본당이 1899년 이곳 합덕으로 옮겨오면서 내포 신앙의 구심점이 되었다. 현재의 붉은 벽돌 쌍탑 고딕 성당은 1929년 건립된 것으로, 정면에 우뚝 솟은 두 개의 종탑이 인상적인 충남도 지정 기념물이다. 내포는 이존창의 전교 이래 조선 천주교 신앙이 가장 먼저, 가장 깊이 뿌리내린 땅으로 수많은 순교자를 배출했으며, 합덕성당은 박해가 끝난 뒤 그 순교의 들녘 위에 세워진 신앙 재건의 상징이었다. 성당이 선 언덕 아래로는 조선시대의 저수지 합덕제와 너른 내포 평야가 펼쳐져, 백 년 가까이 이 지역 신앙의 등대 역할을 해온 성당의 자리가 한눈에 실감난다. 이 본당에서 여러 사제와 수도자가 배출되어 '사제의 못자리'로도 불려 왔다. 눈물로 씨를 뿌리던 박해의 땅이 기쁨의 단을 거두는 땅이 된 역사는 '눈물을 흘리며 씨를 뿌리는 자는 기쁨으로 거두리로다'(시 126:5)라는 시편의 약속을 건축으로 보여주는 듯하다. 언덕 위에서 내포 평야를 내려다보며 이 들판 곳곳에 숨어 살던 교우촌들을 상상해 보길 권한다.
Hapdeok Catholic Church — Chungnam Dangjin-si
Hapdeok Church traces its roots to a parish founded in 1890 at nearby Yangchon and moved here in 1899, becoming the anchor of faith in the Naepo region; the present twin-towered brick Gothic church, completed in 1929, is a designated provincial monument. Naepo was the heartland where Catholicism first took deep root in Joseon Korea, producing many martyrs, and this church rose over those former fields of persecution as a symbol of rebuilding. From its hilltop the church overlooks the old Hapdeok reservoir and the broad Naepo plain, and the parish has been called a 'seedbed of priests' for the many vocations it nurtured. The sanctuary standing over a land once watered by tears feels like the Psalmist's promise built in brick: those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy (Ps 126:5).
