니케아 성 소피아 교회(이즈니크)

325년 콘스탄티누스 대제가 소집한 제1차 니케아 공의회가 열린 도시 니케아(오늘의 이즈니크)의 중심 교회 자리다. 제국 전역에서 모인 300여 명의 감독들은 그리스도를 피조물로 낮추는 아리우스의 가르침에 맞서, 아들이 아버지와 '동일 본질'이시며 '참 하나님에게서 나신 참 하나님'이심을 고백하는 니케아 신경을 채택했다. 여기에는 디오클레티아누스 박해의 상처가 몸에 남은 고백자들도 참석했다고 전해져, 이 신경이 책상의 문서가 아니라 피로 지킨 고백이었음을 일깨운다. 787년에는 성상 논쟁을 다룬 제7차 공의회가 바로 이 성 소피아 교회에서 열려, 이 작은 호반 도시는 두 차례나 세계 교회의 중심이 되었다. 오늘 전 세계 교회가 함께 고백하는 신앙고백의 뿌리가 이곳에 있으며, 종교개혁자들도 니케아 신경을 정통 신앙의 표준으로 받아들였으므로 개신교 순례자에게도 이곳은 '한 주, 한 믿음'(엡 4:5)의 기원을 확인하는 자리다. 건물은 비잔틴 교회, 오스만 모스크의 역사를 거치며 도로보다 낮게 가라앉은 채 보존되어 있고 근래 다시 모스크로 쓰이고 있다. 2014년에는 이즈니크 호수 속에서 초기 바실리카 유적이 발견되어 수중 고고학의 화제가 되었으며, 2025년 니케아 공의회 1700주년을 맞아 세계 교회의 순례가 이어지고 있다.
Hagia Sophia of Nicaea (İznik) — Iznik
İznik is ancient Nicaea, where the First Ecumenical Council of 325, gathering some three hundred bishops — some still bearing the scars of persecution — confessed Christ as 'true God from true God', of one being with the Father, against Arius. This Hagia Sophia church later hosted the Seventh Council in 787, making the small lakeside city twice the center of the universal church. The creed hammered out here is still confessed by churches worldwide, and the Reformers embraced it as the standard of orthodox faith, so Protestant pilgrims too come to touch the root of 'one Lord, one faith' (Ephesians 4:5). The sunken church interior lies below modern street level, and in 2014 the ruins of an early basilica were discovered beneath the waters of Lake İznik; the 1700th anniversary of the council in 2025 has renewed pilgrimage to the town.
