해미국제성지

해미국제성지는 병인박해 전후 수많은 무명 순교자들이 처형되고 생매장당한 '여숫골'에 조성된 성지다. 내포 지역의 신자들이 이곳으로 끌려와 죽임을 당했는데, 이름조차 남기지 못한 채 진둠벙이라 불리는 물웅덩이에 수장되거나 구덩이에 산 채로 묻혔다. 순교자들이 죽어가며 '예수 마리아'를 부르던 소리가 인근 사람들에게 '여수머리'로 들려 지금의 '여숫골'이라는 지명이 되었다고 전해질 만큼, 이곳의 참상은 지명 속에 새겨져 있다. 1935년 이후 이 일대에서 순교자들의 유해가 발굴되면서 성지로 조성되기 시작했고, 2014년에는 프란치스코 교황이 한국을 찾아 인근을 방문했으며, 이후 교황청이 승인한 국제 순례지로 선포되어 세계적 순례지가 되었다. 기록에 이름을 남긴 영웅이 아니라 이름 없는 보통 신자들이 무리로 죽어간 현장이라는 점에서, 이곳은 '이런 사람은 세상이 감당하지 못하느니라'(히 11:38)는 말씀에 등장하는 무명의 믿음의 사람들을 기억하게 한다. 넓은 성지 안에는 생매장 터, 유해가 발굴된 자리, 순교탑과 기념 성당이 이어져 있어 걸으며 묵상하기에 좋다. 이곳에서 해미읍성까지 이어지는 순교자의 길을 천천히 함께 걸어보길 권한다.
Haemi International Shrine — Chungnam Seosan-si
Haemi is the burial ground of countless unnamed martyrs who were drowned in a muddy pit, buried alive, or executed in the great persecutions — believers of the Naepo region dragged here to die. Tradition holds that their dying cries of 'Jesus, Mary' were heard as 'Yeosu-meori,' giving the place its name, Yeosutgol, so that the horror is inscribed in the very ground. Their remains began to be recovered after 1935, and after Pope Francis visited the region in 2014 the site was declared an international shrine recognized by the Vatican. Precisely because these were nameless ordinary believers rather than famous heroes, the place powerfully evokes those 'of whom the world was not worthy' (Heb. 11:38). The path linking the live-burial ground, the excavation site, the martyrs' tower, and the shrine — and continuing to Haemi Fortress — is well worth walking slowly.
