관덕정순교기념관

관덕정순교기념관은 조선 시대 대구의 관덕정 형장 터에 1991년 세워진 순교 기념관이다. 관덕정은 본래 무예를 익히고 활을 쏘던 관아의 정자였으나, 박해 시대에는 신자들을 처형하는 형장으로 쓰였다. 을해박해(1815), 정해박해(1827), 그리고 병인박해(1866) 때 경상도 각지에서 붙잡혀 온 수많은 신자들이 이곳에서 목숨을 잃었다. 그 가운데 1866년 이곳에서 순교한 성 이윤일 요한(1823~1867)은 오늘날 한국 천주교회가 공경하는 성인 중 한 사람으로, 그의 유해가 지하 경당에 모셔져 있다. 기념관에는 대구와 경북 지역 순교사의 자료들이 함께 전시되어 있다. 지금은 사람들이 무심히 오가는 도심 한복판의 이 거리가, 실은 믿음의 선진들이 신앙을 지키려 피 흘린 자리라는 사실은 순례자의 발걸음을 문득 멈춰 세운다. 오늘 우리가 누리는 신앙의 자유가 결코 값없이 주어진 것이 아니라 이들의 순교로 얻어진 것임을, 개신교 순례자에게도 깊이 일깨우는 곳이다. 지하 경당에 모셔진 이윤일 성인의 유해 앞에서 잠시 묵상의 시간을 가져 보라.
Gwandeokjeong Martyrs' Memorial Hall — Daegu Jung-gu
Built in 1991 on the site of Daegu's Gwandeokjeong execution ground, this memorial hall marks a place that was once a pavilion for archery and martial training but became, in the age of persecution, a place of execution. Many believers seized across the Gyeongsang region were put to death here in the persecutions of 1815, 1827, and 1866. Among them, St. Yi Yun-il John (1823-1867), martyred here in 1866, is honored today as one of Korea's saints, and his remains are enshrined in the crypt chapel. The hall also displays materials on the martyrdom history of Daegu and Gyeongbuk. That an ordinary downtown street where people now pass without a thought was once soaked with the blood of the faithful stops the pilgrim in his tracks. It reminds all traditions that the religious freedom we enjoy was not given freely but purchased by these martyrs. Take a moment of reflection before the relics of St. Yi in the crypt chapel.
