군산 구암교회·구암동산

금강이 내려다보이는 구암동산은 1890년대 미국 남장로교 군산 선교부가 자리 잡은 언덕으로, 구암교회와 영명학교, 병원이 함께 세워져 군산 선교의 심장이 되었다. 전킨과 드루 선교사가 뱃길로 드나들며 복음을 전하던 이 언덕은 교육과 의료, 전도가 한 몸을 이룬 선교 기지로 성장했다. 1919년 3월 5일 새벽 영명학교 학생들과 교인들이 이 언덕에서 태극기를 들고 나선 만세운동은 호남 최초의 3.1만세운동으로 기록되며, 많은 이들이 체포되어 옥고를 치렀다. 학교에서 성경과 양심을 배운 신앙 청년들이 민족의 십자가를 함께 진 이 역사는 복음과 겨레 사랑이 하나였던 초기 한국교회의 정신을 보여준다. 지금 동산에는 3.1운동 기념탑과 조형물, 100주년기념관, 재현된 옛 예배당이 들어서 순례자를 맞는다. 언덕을 천천히 걸으며 그날 새벽의 함성과 기도를 떠올려 보라. 강바람 부는 이 작은 언덕 하나가 한 지역의 영적 지형을 바꾸어 놓았다.
Guam Church & Hill, Gunsan — Jeonbuk Gunsan-si
Guam hill above the Geum River, home of the Southern Presbyterian Gunsan mission from the 1890s, held church, school, and hospital together as the heart of the region's mission. From this hill, at dawn on March 5, 1919, students of Yeongmyeong School and church members marched out with Korean flags in Honam's first independence demonstration, and many were imprisoned. Young believers schooled in Scripture and conscience carried their nation's cross — early Korean Christianity's union of gospel and patriotism made visible. Today memorial towers, a centennial museum, and a reconstructed chapel welcome pilgrims; walk the hill slowly and imagine the cries and prayers of that morning.
