군산 구암교회
군산 구암교회는 1893년 미국 남장로교의 전킨(전위렴)과 드루(유대모) 선교사가 시작한 군산 선교의 열매로, 호남 선교의 전초기지가 된 교회다. 선교부는 금강가 구암동산에 자리 잡아 교회와 영명학교, 병원을 함께 세우며 몸과 영혼을 아우르는 총체적 복음의 본을 보였다. 1919년 3월 5일 이 교회와 영명학교 교사·학생들이 주도한 만세운동은 호남 최초의 3.1만세운동으로, 복음으로 깨어난 이들이 민족의 고난에 가장 먼저 응답했음을 보여준다. 개척자 전킨 선교사는 어린 세 아들을 이 땅에 묻고도 사역을 계속하다 1908년 폐렴으로 소천하여, 한국 교회에 깊은 헌신의 이름으로 기억된다. 교회는 오늘까지 이어져 군산 지역 복음화의 어머니 교회 역할을 감당하고 있다. 구암동산에 조성된 3.1운동 기념 공간과 재현된 옛 예배당을 함께 둘러보면 신앙과 항일운동이 겹쳐진 역사가 입체적으로 다가온다. 금강 너머로 지는 노을을 바라보며 130년 전 이 강가에 내린 복음의 씨앗을 묵상해 보라.
Guam Church, Gunsan — Jeonbuk Gunsan-si
Guam Church grew from the Gunsan mission begun in 1893 by Southern Presbyterian missionaries William Junkin and Alessandro Drew, becoming the forward base of the gospel in the Honam region. On Guam hill by the Geum River, the mission planted church, school, and hospital together — a model of holistic mission. On March 5, 1919, the church and its Yeongmyeong School led Honam's first independence demonstration, believers awakened by the gospel answering their nation's suffering first. Junkin buried three young sons in Korean soil and served on until his death from pneumonia in 1908; the church he planted remains the mother church of Gunsan's Christians, surrounded today by memorials on Guam hill.
