무리스탄, 성묘교회 남쪽에 자리한 이 작은 그리스 정교회 성당은 좁은 골목에 숨어 자칫 지나치기 쉽지만, 놀랍도록 깊은 역사를 품고 있습니다. 지상 건물은 11세기의 것이나, 그 아래 지하 예배당은 후기 로마와 비잔틴 시대인 4세기에서 6세기로 거슬러 올라가, 예루살렘에서 가장 오래된 교회 구조 가운데 하나로 널리 인정받습니다. 11~12세기에 이 교회 곁에서 순례자와 병자를 돌보던 구호기사단, 곧 성 요한 기사단이 바로 이곳에서 그 이름을 얻었으니, 오늘날 세계 여러 나라의 구호·의료 전통이 이 작은 자리에 뿌리를 두고 있는 셈입니다. 은녹색으로 은은히 빛나는 이코노스타시스(성화벽)는 1853년에 조성된 것으로 세례 요한의 생애 장면들을 정교하게 담고 있습니다. 규모가 작고 어둑해 순례자들이 놓치기 쉬우나, 광야에서 회개를 외치며 주의 길을 예비한 세례 요한을 기리기에 더없이 좋은 조용한 자리입니다. 방문 팁: 지하 구조의 오래된 벽을 눈으로 확인하고, 소란한 시장 골목에서 벗어나 잠시 침묵의 기도를 드려 보십시오.
Greek Orthodox Church of Saint John the Baptist — Jerusalem
In the Muristan just south of the Holy Sepulchre, this small Greek Orthodox church is easy to miss yet rich in history. Its upper building is eleventh-century, but the crypt beneath dates to the Late Roman and Byzantine period of the fourth to sixth centuries, widely recognized as one of the oldest church structures in Jerusalem. In the eleventh and twelfth centuries the Knights Hospitaller, the Order of St. John who cared for pilgrims and the sick beside this church, took their name from this very place. Its silver-green iconostasis, made in 1853, portrays scenes from the life of John the Baptist. Small and tucked away, it is easily overlooked, yet it is a quiet spot to honor the one who prepared the Lord's way.
