공주 중학동 선교유적

공주 중학동 선교유적은 1900년대 초 미국 감리교 선교부가 자리 잡았던 언덕 일대로, 샤프·사애리시 선교사 부부가 1906년 세운 영명학교 터를 중심으로 한다. 감리교 선교부는 이 언덕에 학교와 교회, 진료소와 사택을 세워 공주를 충남 내륙 선교의 거점으로 삼았고, 복음과 근대교육, 의료가 한 언덕에서 함께 흘러나갔다. 이곳에서 공부한 유관순은 사애리시의 주선으로 이화학당에 진학해 훗날 3.1운동의 상징이 되었고, 조병옥을 비롯한 졸업생들도 민족운동의 지도자로 성장했다. 1919년 공주 만세운동에서 영명학교 교사와 학생들이 주역을 감당한 것은 이 언덕에 심긴 신앙 교육의 자연스러운 열매였다. 믿음이 개인의 구원을 넘어 민족의 소망으로 확장된 역사를 이보다 잘 보여주는 곳도 드물다. 언덕 위에는 옛 학교 관련 기념물과 선교사 가옥, 선교사 묘역이 함께 남아 있어 도보 순례 코스로 좋다. 영명학교 교정에서 공주 시내를 내려다보며 100여 년 전 선교사들이 이 도시를 놓고 품었을 기도와 비전을 상상해 보자.

✝ 순례자의 묵상이 언덕에 심긴 복음은 학교가 되고, 병원이 되고, 마침내 한 민족의 소망이 되었다. 복음은 언제나 한 사람을 살리는 데서 그치지 않고 공동체를 깨운다. '너희는 세상의 빛이라 산 위에 있는 동네가 숨겨지지 못할 것이요'(마 5:14)라는 말씀처럼, 오늘 내가 선 자리에서 비추어야 할 빛은 무엇인지 언덕 위에서 생각해 보자.

Gongju Junghak-dong Mission Site — Chungnam Gongju-si

The Junghak-dong mission site centers on the grounds of Yeongmyeong School, founded in 1906 by missionaries Robert and Alice Sharp on the hill where the Methodist mission planted its school, church, clinic, and residences—the hub of work across inland Chungcheong. Gospel, modern education, and medicine flowed together from this hilltop: Yu Gwan-sun studied here before Alice Sharp guided her to Ewha, and graduates like Cho Byeong-ok became leaders of the national movement. Teachers and students of Yeongmyeong stood at the front of Gongju's 1919 independence demonstrations, the natural fruit of the faith planted on this hill. The school site, missionary house, and cemetery form a compact walking pilgrimage with views over Gongju.

✝ PILGRIM'S REFLECTIONThe gospel planted on this hill became a school, a clinic, and finally the hope of a nation—for the gospel never stops at saving one person but awakens a community. As Matthew 5:14 says, 'a town built on a hill cannot be hidden'; standing here, we ask what light we are called to shine from where we stand.
