김제 금산교회

김제 금산교회는 1905년 테이트(최의덕) 선교사의 전도로 시작되어 1908년 ㄱ자형 한옥 예배당을 지은 교회로, 현존하는 대표적인 ㄱ자 교회다. 남녀가 유별하던 시대에 두 날개의 예배 공간을 직각으로 배치하고 강단을 그 꼭짓점에 두어, 남녀가 서로 보지 않고도 한 설교자를 바라보게 한 독특한 구조가 전북 문화재로 보존되어 있다. 이 교회는 마방을 운영하던 부자 조덕삼과 그의 마부 이자익의 이야기로 더욱 유명하다. 장로 선거에서 주인 조덕삼을 제치고 마부 이자익이 먼저 장로로 선출되자, 조덕삼은 기쁨으로 결과에 승복하여 그를 장로로 섬겼고 훗날 평양신학교 유학까지 후원했다. 이자익은 목사가 되어 조선예수교장로회 총회장을 세 차례나 지냈고, 조덕삼도 뒤에 장로가 되어 끝까지 교회를 섬겼다. 신분의 벽을 뛰어넘은 두 사람의 이야기는 그리스도 안에서 종이나 자유인이 하나라는 복음의 능력을 보여주는 한국교회의 보석 같은 유산이다. 한옥 예배당 마루에 앉아 100여 년 전 갓 쓴 성도들과 여인들이 나뉘어 앉았을 자리를 그려 보라.
Geumsan Church — Jeonbuk Gimje-si
Geumsan Church, begun in 1905 through missionary Lewis Tate and housed since 1908 in Korea's best-known surviving L-shaped hanok sanctuary, placed its pulpit at the corner so men and women, seated in separate wings, could see the preacher but not each other. It is celebrated above all for the story of wealthy stable-owner Cho Deok-sam and his groom Yi Ja-ik: when the groom was elected elder before the master, Cho joyfully submitted, served under him, and even funded his theological training in Pyongyang. Yi went on to serve three times as moderator of the Presbyterian General Assembly, while Cho later became an elder himself. Sit on the wooden floor and picture the gospel quietly overturning the class lines of a century ago.
