왜관 가실성당

1895년 설립된 가실성당은 경북에서 가장 오래된 본당 가운데 하나로, 파리외방전교회 선교사들의 노력으로 낙동강 변 칠곡 가실에 세워졌다. 현재의 아름다운 붉은 벽돌 로마네스크 양식 성당은 프랑스인 신부의 설계로 1924년에 완공되었으며, 경상북도 유형문화재로 지정되어 있다. 이 성당은 한국전쟁 당시 낙동강 방어선의 치열한 격전지였던 왜관 인근에 자리했음에도 파괴를 면했는데, 전쟁 중 야전 병원으로 사용된 덕분이었다고 전해진다. 포화가 온 강을 뒤덮던 시절, 상하고 부서진 몸들을 품어 안는 치유의 집이 되었던 이 성당의 이야기는, 교회가 세상 속에서 감당해야 할 역할이 무엇인지를 조용히 일러 준다. 백 년이 넘는 세월 동안 낙동강을 지켜 온 이 성당은 그 단아한 아름다움 덕에 여러 영화와 드라마의 촬영지로도 사랑받아 왔다. 아치가 리듬처럼 반복되는 로마네스크 정면부와, 세월이 곱게 스민 백 년 된 벽돌의 빛깔을 천천히 감상해 보라.
Gasil Catholic Church — Gyeongbuk Chilgok-gun
Founded in 1895, Gasil Church is among the oldest parishes in Gyeongsangbuk-do, built beside the Nakdong River in Chilgok through the labors of Paris Foreign Missions priests. Its beautiful red-brick Romanesque church, designed by a French priest, was completed in 1924 and is a provincial cultural heritage site. Though it stood near Waegwan on the fierce Nakdong defense line of the Korean War, it is said to have escaped destruction because it served as a field hospital. In days when gunfire covered the whole river, this church became a house of healing that gathered in broken bodies — quietly showing what the church is for in the world.
