겟세마네 동산과 만국교회

감람산 기슭의 겟세마네는 '기름 짜는 틀'이라는 뜻으로, 예수님이 잡히시던 밤 '내 아버지여 만일 할 만하시거든 이 잔을 내게서 지나가게 하옵소서 그러나 나의 원대로 마시옵고 아버지의 원대로 하옵소서'(마 26:39)라고 기도하며 고뇌하신 동산이다. 누가는 그 기도가 얼마나 간절했는지 '땀이 땅에 떨어지는 핏방울같이 되더라'(눅 22:44)고 기록했다. 정원에는 수령이 매우 오래된 올리브 나무 여덟 그루가 서 있는데, 연구 결과 줄기 일부가 9백 년 안팎으로 확인되었고 뿌리는 그보다 훨씬 오래되었을 수 있어 예수님 당시 나무들의 후손으로 여겨진다. 곁의 만국교회(고뇌의 대성당)는 4세기 비잔틴 교회와 십자군 교회 터 위에 여러 나라의 헌금으로 1924년 완공되었으며, 건축가 안토니오 바를루치가 설계했다. 제단 앞에는 예수님이 엎드려 기도하셨다고 전해지는 '고뇌의 바위'가 드러나 있고, 보랏빛 알라바스터 창으로 어둑하게 연출된 내부가 그 밤의 어둠을 재현한다. 천장 모자이크에는 헌금한 열두 나라의 문장이 새겨져 '만국교회'라는 이름의 유래가 되었다. 자기 뜻이 아니라 아버지의 뜻에 순종하신 그 밤의 기도는 모든 그리스도인의 기도의 원형이며, 고요한 시간에 정원 곁 바위에 앉아 마태복음 26장을 읽는 것이 이곳 순례의 핵심이다.
Garden of Gethsemane & Church of All Nations — Jerusalem
At the foot of the Mount of Olives, Gethsemane ('oil press') is the garden where Jesus prayed in anguish on the night of his arrest — 'not as I will, but as you will' (Matthew 26:39), his sweat falling 'like drops of blood' (Luke 22:44). Eight ancient olive trees still stand, parts of their trunks dated to around nine centuries with far older root systems, likely descendants of the trees of Jesus' day. The adjacent Church of All Nations, designed by Antonio Barluzzi and completed in 1924 over Byzantine and Crusader foundations with gifts from twelve nations, frames the traditional Rock of Agony before its altar. Dim violet light filtering through alabaster windows recreates the darkness of that night of obedient prayer. Come at a quiet hour and read Matthew 26 beside the olive trees.
