감곡매괴성모순례지성당
감곡매괴성모순례지성당은 1896년 프랑스 파리외방전교회 소속 임가밀로(카미유 부이용) 신부가 설립한 충북 최초의 천주교 본당으로, 지금의 아름다운 고딕 성당은 1930년에 완공되었다. 임가밀로 신부는 이곳 매산 자락에 자리했던 옛 대갓집 터를 매입해 성당과 사제관을 세웠고, 이후 한 본당을 떠나지 않고 근 50년 가까이 사목하며 지역민과 함께 늙어 갔다고 전해진다. 이 성당은 한국에서 처음으로 성체를 모시고 마을을 도는 성체거동 행렬이 시작된 곳으로 전해지며, 매괴(묵주) 성모께 봉헌된 순례지 성당으로서 충북 천주교의 어머니 본당 역할을 오랫동안 해 왔다. 개신교 순례자에게는 성모 신심의 형식보다도, 한 선교사가 평생 한 지역을 떠나지 않고 신실하게 섬긴 목회의 태도가 깊은 인상을 남기는 자리다. 낯선 땅에 와서 한 마을을 자기 삶의 자리로 삼고 끝까지 지킨 그의 생애는, 양 떼를 알고 이름을 부르는 목자의 모습과 겹친다. 언덕 위에 우뚝 선 성당은 감곡의 들녘을 내려다보며 백 년 넘게 그 자리를 지켜 왔다. 언덕 위 성당에서 내려다보이는 감곡 들녘의 풍경과 세월이 배인 고딕 건축을 함께 천천히 감상해 보자.
Gamgok Maegoe Shrine of Our Lady — Chungbuk Eumseong-gun
Gamgok, the first Catholic parish in North Chungcheong, was founded in 1896 by the French missionary Fr. Camille Bouillon, and its lovely Gothic church was completed in 1930. Bouillon bought the site of an old manor at the foot of the hill to build the church and rectory, then stayed and served this single parish for nearly fifty years, growing old alongside the villagers. It is remembered as the place where Korea's first Eucharistic processions began, and as a Marian pilgrimage church it long served as the mother parish of North Chungcheong. For a Protestant pilgrim, what impresses most is not the form of Marian devotion but the missionary's lifelong faithfulness to a single rural flock — coming to a strange land, making one village his own, and keeping it to the end, like a shepherd who knows his sheep by name. Perched on a hill above the fields of Gamgok, the church has kept its place for over a century.
