갈매못순교성지
갈매못순교성지는 1866년 병인박해 때 성 다블뤼 안토니오 주교와 오메트르·위앵 신부, 황석두·장주기 등 다섯 성인이 군문효수형으로 순교한 바닷가 처형지다. 조선 조정은 고종의 국혼을 앞두고 도성 가까이에서 피 흘리는 것을 피하려 도성에서 250리 떨어진 이곳 충청수영 근처를 처형지로 삼았다고 전해진다. 다섯 순교자가 서울에서 이곳까지 끌려온 길은 그대로 고난의 길이었으나, 기록에 따르면 그들은 두려움보다 평안으로 그 길을 걸었다고 한다. 처형은 1866년 3월 30일에 집행되었고, 다섯 순교자는 1984년 서울에서 요한 바오로 2세 교황에 의해 시성되었다. 서해가 내려다보이는 언덕에는 순교기념성당과 기념관이 세워져 순례자들을 맞으며, 성당에서 바닷가 처형 터까지 이어지는 길이 순례 동선을 이룬다. 이국 선교사와 조선 평신도가 한 신앙 안에서 함께 죽음을 맞은 이 자리는, 개신교 순례자에게도 스데반처럼 '죽기까지 신실했던' 믿음의 증인들을 기억하게 한다. 기념성당에서 바다 쪽으로 내려가 실제 처형 터로 전해지는 자리에 직접 서 보길 권한다.
Galmaemot Martyrs' Shrine — Chungnam Boryeong-si
At this coastal execution site in 1866, Bishop Antoine Daveluy, Fathers Aumaître and Huin, and lay leaders Hwang Seok-du and Jang Ju-gi were beheaded in the Byeongin persecution, after the court—wary of shedding blood near the capital before a royal wedding—chose this naval station shore some sixty miles away. Accounts tell that the five walked their long road south with peace rather than terror, and all were canonized by Pope John Paul II in Seoul in 1984. A memorial church and hall now stand on the bluff above the Yellow Sea, with a pilgrim path leading down to the traditional execution spot by the water. Foreign missionaries and Korean lay believers dying together in one faith recall witnesses who, like Stephen, were faithful unto death.
