공주 중학동 구 선교사 가옥

공주 중학동의 구 선교사 가옥은 1910년대 공주 선교부(스테이션)의 서양인 선교사들이 거주하던 붉은 벽돌 사택으로, 국가등록문화재로 지정되어 있다. 미국 감리교 선교부는 1900년대 초부터 이 언덕 일대에 영명학교와 진료소, 교회와 사택을 차례로 세워 충남 내륙 선교의 거점으로 삼았고, 이 가옥은 그 시절 선교사들의 생활상을 보여주는 드문 건축 유산이다. 붉은 벽돌 벽체와 베란다, 서양식 창호 등 1910년대 선교부 주택 건축의 특징이 잘 남아 있어 건축사적으로도 가치가 높다. 선교사들은 이 집에서 자녀를 낳아 기르고, 풍토병과 사별의 아픔을 겪으며, 아침마다 언덕 아래 공주 읍내를 내려다보며 기도로 하루를 열었을 것이다. 복음 전파가 거창한 사건만이 아니라 밥을 짓고 아이를 키우는 삶 전체를 낯선 땅에 옮겨 심는 헌신이었음을 이 집은 조용히 증언한다. 영명학교, 선교사 묘역과 함께 언덕 일대의 선교 유적군을 이루어 공주가 충청 선교의 중심이던 시절을 보여준다. 붉은 벽돌과 베란다 등 옛 모습을 간직한 외관을 천천히 둘러보며 100여 년 전 선교사 가정의 하루를 상상해 보자.
Former Missionary House, Junghak-dong, Gongju — Chungnam Gongju-si
This red-brick house in Junghak-dong, built in the 1910s, housed Western missionaries of the Gongju mission station and is now a registered national cultural heritage site. From the early 1900s the Methodist mission built up this hillside with Yeongmyeong School, a clinic, a church, and residences, making it the hub of work across inland Chungcheong; the house is a rare architectural witness to missionary life of that era, with its brick walls, veranda, and Western detailing. Here missionaries raised children, endured illness and bereavement, and began each day in prayer overlooking the town below. Together with the school site and the missionary cemetery, it reminds visitors that mission meant transplanting whole lives—families, homes, and daily routines—into unfamiliar soil.
