목포 정명여학교 옛 선교사 사택

목포 정명여학교 옛 선교사 사택은 1903년 미국 남장로교 선교부가 세운 정명여학교 교정에 남아 있는 건물로, 국가등록문화재로 지정되어 있다. 정명여학교는 목포 여성 근대교육의 발상지로, 배움의 기회조차 갖지 못했던 소외된 여성들에게 복음이 지식과 자립의 길을 열어 준 호남 선교의 귀한 결실이다. 당시 조선 사회에서 여성은 이름조차 제대로 불리지 못하는 경우가 많았으나, 선교사들은 이들 역시 하나님의 형상으로 지음받은 존귀한 존재로 여기고 가르쳤다. 이렇게 신앙 위에 세워진 교육은 단지 지식만이 아니라 진리를 향한 용기를 길러 냈으니, 1919년 3·1운동 때 정명의 여학생들이 만세운동에 앞장서 나선 일이 그 증거다. 어린 소녀들이 두려움을 무릅쓰고 거리로 나선 것은, 진리가 사람을 자유롭게 한다는 말씀이 이 땅에서 실제로 이루어진 장면이었다. 붉은 벽돌로 지은 사택의 베란다와 창문 앞에 서면, 100여 년 전 이곳에서 소녀들을 가르치며 함께 웃고 기도하던 선교사 가족의 생활상을 그려 볼 수 있다.
Former Missionary House, Jeongmyeong Girls' School — Jeonnam Mokpo-si
This former missionary residence, a registered national cultural heritage, stands on the campus of Jeongmyeong Girls' School, founded in 1903 by the Southern Presbyterian mission as the cradle of modern women's education in Mokpo. It is a precious fruit of Honam mission, opening the paths of knowledge and self-reliance through the gospel to women long shut out from any chance to learn. In the Korean society of that day women were often not even properly named, yet the missionaries taught them as honored beings made in God's image. Education built on such faith nurtured not only knowledge but courage for the truth: in the 1919 independence movement, Jeongmyeong's schoolgirls marched at the very front. That young girls braved fear to take to the streets was a scene of the word 'the truth will set you free' made real on this soil. Standing before the red-brick house with its veranda and windows, one can imagine the missionary family who taught, laughed, and prayed with these girls over a century ago.
