구 부산진일신여학교

1895년 호주장로교 여선교사들이 좌천동에 세운 부산 최초의 근대 여성교육기관으로, 1905년에 지어진 서양식 교사가 부산광역시 기념물로 남아 있다. 호주장로교 선교부는 1891년 부산에 자리 잡은 뒤 여성과 아이들, 소외된 이들을 향한 사역에 힘을 쏟았고, 멘지스를 비롯한 여선교사들이 고아들을 돌보던 사역에서 일신여학교가 태어났다. '일신(日新)'이라는 이름은 날마다 새로워진다는 뜻으로, 여성이 이름조차 제대로 갖지 못하던 시절 이 학교는 성경과 한글, 근대 학문을 가르치며 부산·경남 여성 교육의 문을 열었다. 1919년 3월 11일, 교사와 학생들은 부산·경남 지역에서 가장 먼저 만세운동을 일으켰고, 이 일로 교사와 학생 여럿이 체포되어 옥고를 치렀으나 그 불꽃은 지역 전체로 번져 나갔다. 복음이 여성의 존엄을 깨우고 그 깨어난 양심이 민족의식으로 타오른 현장으로, 호주 선교부가 한국에 남긴 가장 빛나는 유산 가운데 하나로 꼽힌다. 학교는 훗날 동래로 옮겨 오늘까지 교육을 이어 가고 있으며, 좌천동의 옛 교사는 전시관으로 단장되어 초기 역사를 증언한다. 2층 서양식 교사의 아치형 회랑과 전시실의 빛바랜 사진들을 둘러보고, 부산진교회 등 좌천동 선교 유적 일대를 함께 걸어 보자.
Former Busanjin Ilsin Girls' School — Busan Dong-gu
Founded in 1895 by Australian Presbyterian women missionaries in Jwacheon-dong, Ilsin Girls' School was Busan's first modern school for women, and its 1905 Western-style building survives as a city monument. Growing out of the missionaries' care for orphaned girls, the school — whose name means 'new every day' — taught the Bible, Korean script, and modern subjects when women could scarcely claim names of their own. On March 11, 1919, its teachers and students launched the first March First independence demonstrations in the Busan-Gyeongnam region, enduring arrest and imprisonment as the movement spread. The school remains one of the brightest legacies of the Australian mission, where the gospel awakened both women's dignity and national conscience; the arched veranda of the old schoolhouse and its exhibits reward a visit along with the surrounding mission sites.
