Former Alexander Hospital Isolation Ward — Jeonnam Suncheon-si
The isolation ward of the former Alexander Hospital in Suncheon is the sole surviving building of that hospital, founded in 1916 by the Southern Presbyterian mission; the ward was built in 1932 and is now registered heritage. Alexander Hospital was the largest mission hospital in southern Korea, second only to Severance in Seoul, named for the American physician who funded its founding. It cared without charge for the poor who had no other means of treatment, conveying Christ's compassion not in words but by hand. Most notably, it built a separate ward to embrace even contagious patients — those everyone else avoided for fear of infection. To obey the Lord's command to heal the sick, its staff braved danger to reach the most shunned of all. Now the sole remaining piece of a vanished hospital, this small brick ward quietly testifies to the spirit of that healing ministry.
