제1산티아고감리교회

파르케 포르탈레스를 마주하고 선 제1산티아고감리교회는 감리교 선교사 윌리엄 테일러가 1877년 칠레에 복음을 전한 지 근 반세기가 지나서야 세워진, 수도 산티아고의 첫 감리교 예배당이다. 1880년대부터 산티아고에서도 감리교 사역이 시작되었지만, 재정난과 거센 반발에 거듭 부딪히며 좀처럼 자리를 잡지 못했다. 1883년에는 융가이 지구 산파블로 거리에서 설교하던 루시우스 스미스 목사가 반개신교 군중에게 폭행을 당하는 일마저 벌어졌다. 그런 우여곡절 끝에 1909년에야 비로소 부지를 매입할 수 있었고, 마침내 1925년 4월 26일 오랜 기다림 끝에 예배당이 봉헌되었다. 공교롭게도 이는 교회와 국가의 분리를 명시한 1925년 헌법이 공포된 해이기도 했다. 이 교회는 발파라이소에서 윌리스 후버 목사를 통해 1909년 오순절 부흥이 일어나 훗날 칠레 최대 복음주의 교단이 갈라져 나가는 것과 같은 선교 네트워크에 뿌리를 두고 있지만, 산티아고 교회 자신은 오순절 운동에 합류하지 않고 주류 감리교 전통을 지켜 왔다. 방문할 때는 반세기의 기다림 끝에 세워진 이 예배당 앞에서, 더디더라도 끝내 이루어진 헌신의 시간을 함께 기억해 보길 권한다.
First Methodist Church of Santiago — Santiago
Facing Parque Portales, the First Methodist Church of Santiago is the capital's first dedicated Methodist sanctuary, built nearly half a century after missionary William Taylor first brought Methodism to Chile in 1877. Methodist work began in Santiago in the 1880s but repeatedly stalled amid funding shortfalls and fierce opposition; in 1883 Rev. Lucius Smith was even assaulted by an anti-Protestant mob while preaching on San Pablo Street in the Yungay district. Only in 1909 could the congregation finally purchase land, and after further delay the church was inaugurated on April 26, 1925 — the same year Chile's new constitution formally separated church and state. This congregation shares its roots in the same missionary network that, in Valparaíso, produced Willis Hoover's 1909 Pentecostal revival and the later split that formed Chile's largest evangelical denomination — yet Santiago's Methodist church itself never joined that Pentecostal break and has remained within mainline Methodism. Standing before a sanctuary built only after decades of waiting, visitors can remember a devotion that, though slow, was finally fulfilled.
