콘셉시온 제일감리교회
칠레 중남부 비오비오주의 중심 도시 콘셉시온 시내 로스카레라 거리에 자리한 콘셉시온 제일감리교회는, 1870년대 말 미국인 순회 전도자 윌리엄 테일러가 이키케·안토파가스타·라세레나·콘셉시온 등지에 세운 감리교 선교 네트워크의 결실이다. 이 초기 선교는 태평양전쟁(1879~1883)의 발발로 한때 중단되었으나 1880~90년대에 걸쳐 재건되었고, 1886년부터 영어 강습을 제공하던 선교 학교 콜레히오 아메리카노를 모체로 1887년 콘셉시온 회중이 정식 조직되어 1889년 첫 예배당을 세웠다. 그러나 이 예배당은 1911년 화재로 완전히 소실되었고, 신자들은 다시 힘을 모아 건축가 에르네스토 루슬리의 설계로 1914년 새 교회를 봉헌했다. 이번에는 1939년 칠레 역사상 최악의 지진으로 꼽히는 치얀 대지진이 이 건물마저 무너뜨렸다. 그럼에도 신자들은 좌절하지 않고 다시 일어나, 마침내 1951년 지금의 예배당을 완공해 봉헌했다. 전쟁으로 인한 선교 중단과 화재, 대지진까지 60년이 넘는 세월 거듭된 재난 앞에서도 예배 처소를 포기하지 않은 이 공동체의 이야기는 인내가 무엇을 이루는지 보여주는 살아있는 증거다. 방문할 때는 세 번이나 무너지고 다시 세워진 이 자리에 서서, 재난에도 꺾이지 않은 신앙의 뿌리 깊음을 헤아려 보길 권한다.
First Methodist Church of Concepción — Concepción
In downtown Concepción, on Calle Los Carrera in Chile's Biobío region, the First Methodist Church of Concepción is a fruit of the Methodist mission network that American itinerant evangelist William Taylor established across Chile — in Iquique, Antofagasta, La Serena, and Concepción — from the late 1870s. That early mission was disrupted by the outbreak of the War of the Pacific (1879-1883) but rebuilt through the 1880s-90s; growing out of the 'Colegio Americano' mission school that had taught English from 1886, the Concepción congregation was formally organized in 1887 and built its first chapel in 1889. That chapel burned to the ground in 1911. Believers rallied again, and architect Ernesto Loosli designed a new church dedicated in 1914 — only for the catastrophic 1939 Chillán earthquake to bring that building down as well. Undeterred, the congregation rebuilt once more, dedicating the present sanctuary in 1951. Standing on ground rebuilt three times over, visitors can consider how deep faith's roots ran beneath repeated disaster.
