강경침례교회 최초예배지 (옥녀봉)

강경 옥녀봉의 이곳은 1896년 미국 보스턴의 엘라 딩 기념 선교회에서 파송된 파울링 선교사가 지병석 성도의 집에서 첫 예배를 드린 한국 침례교회의 발상지다. 그해 2월, 금강이 내려다보이는 언덕 위 초가에서 선교사 부부와 한국인 신자 몇 사람이 모여 드린 조촐한 예배가 오늘날 수천 교회를 헤아리는 한국 침례교단의 출발점이 되었다. 강경은 당시 금강 수운의 중심 포구로 전국의 물자와 사람이 모이던 곳이어서, 이곳에 뿌려진 복음의 씨앗은 뱃길을 따라 충청과 전라 내륙으로 퍼져나갔다. 현장에는 당시의 'ㄱ자형' 초가 예배당이 복원되어 있는데, 남녀가 유교 관습에 따라 두 날개에 나뉘어 앉고 강단이 그 모서리에 놓였던 초기 한국 교회 특유의 예배 공간을 실물로 보여준다. 크고 화려한 시작이 아니라 한 가정집 마루에서 시작된 교단의 역사는, 겨자씨 한 알이 자라 큰 나무가 되는 하나님 나라의 비유(마 13:31-32)를 실물로 확인하게 한다. 오늘날 이곳은 한국 침례교 성지순례의 중심지로 전국의 순례자들이 찾는다. 복원된 초가 예배당에 들어가 앉아 130년 전 첫 예배의 찬송과 기도 소리를 상상해 보길 권한다.
First Baptist Worship Site, Oknyeobong — Chungnam Nonsan-si
On Oknyeobong hill overlooking the Geum River, missionary E. C. Pauling—sent by the Ella Thing Memorial Mission of Boston—led Korea's first Baptist worship service in 1896 in the home of Ji Byeong-seok, the seed from which the Korean Baptist denomination of thousands of churches grew. Ganggyeong was then the hub of Geum River shipping, and the gospel sown here spread inland along the waterways of Chungcheong and Jeolla. A thatched, L-shaped chapel has been reconstructed on the site, showing the distinctive early Korean arrangement in which men and women sat in separate wings with the pulpit at the corner. A denomination born on the wooden floor of a single home makes the parable of the mustard seed (Matt 13:31-32) tangible; sitting inside the humble reconstruction, one can almost hear the hymns of that first gathering.
