테무코 제일침례교회
테무코 제일침례교회는 칠레 침례교 역사에서 가장 오래된 조직 교회 가운데 하나로 1914년에 세워졌다. 이는 1917년부터 본격화된 남침례교 해외선교부의 칠레 선교 물결보다 앞선 것으로, 그 뿌리는 1890년 스코틀랜드 출신 선교사 대니얼 T. 맥도널드가 칠레에 들어와 개척한 초기 침례교 사역까지 거슬러 올라간다. 맥도널드의 오랜 씨뿌림은 홀로 이룬 성과가 아니었다. 아라우카니아 지역 테무코 인근 카혼에서는 1908년, 여섯 개 회중에서 모인 약 300명의 신자들이 모여 칠레 복음주의침례교총회를 정식으로 창립했다. 이 회중의 다수는 1890년대부터 독일어로 예배드려온 독일계 침례교 이민자들이었고, 이후 현지 칠레인들이 하나둘 합류하며 오늘의 다민족 신앙 공동체를 이루었다. 창립 총회에는 멕시코, 아르헨티나, 쿠바, 브라질, 미국의 침례교 총회 대표들까지 참석해 축하했으니, 테무코는 남미 침례교 연대의 한 상징적 무대였던 셈이다. 오늘날 이 교회는 '에파타'라는 이름의 칠레 수어 사역을 세워 청각장애인 성도들을 섬기고 있다. 클라로 솔라르 대로와 린치 거리가 만나는 모퉁이의 소박한 예배당을 찾는다면, 주일 예배에 수어 통역이 조용히 함께하는 모습도 지켜볼 수 있다.
First Baptist Church of Temuco — Temuco
The First Baptist Church of Temuco, founded in 1914, is one of the earliest organized Baptist congregations in Chile, predating the larger wave of Southern Baptist missionary work that began in 1917. Its roots trace back to 1890, when Scottish missionary Daniel T. MacDonald first planted Baptist work in Chile. That patient sowing bore collective fruit in 1908, when roughly 300 believers from six congregations gathered at Cajón, near Temuco in the Araucanía region, to formally organize the Convención Evangélica Bautista de Chile. Many of these founding members were German Baptist colonists who had worshipped in German since the 1890s, later joined by local Chileans. Representatives from Baptist conventions in Mexico, Argentina, Cuba, Brazil, and the United States attended the founding gathering, making Temuco a symbolic meeting point for Baptist solidarity across the Americas. Today the congregation runs "Effatha," a Chilean Sign Language ministry serving deaf members. Visitors to the modest chapel at the corner of Avenida Claro Solar and Lynch can often see sign-language interpretation woven quietly into Sunday worship.
