은이성지
은이성지는 소년 김대건이 1836년 프랑스 선교사 모방(Maubant) 신부에게 세례를 받고 신학생으로 선발된 곳이자, 훗날 조선 최초의 사제가 되어 돌아와 첫 사목활동을 펼친 본당 터다. '은이(隱里)'는 '숨겨진 동네'라는 뜻으로, 박해를 피한 신자들이 산자락에 이룬 교우촌이었다. 열다섯 소년 김대건은 이곳에서 세례를 받고 최양업·최방제와 함께 신학생으로 뽑혀, 걸어서 국경을 넘고 중국 대륙을 가로질러 수천 리 떨어진 마카오까지 유학길에 올랐다. 낯선 언어와 풍토병, 오랜 이별을 견디며 사제 서품을 받고 돌아와 이 은이 지역을 근거지 삼아 선교하던 김대건은, 이듬해인 1846년 선교사 입국로를 알아보다 체포되어 스물다섯의 나이에 순교했다. 소년의 세례에서 시작해 사제의 순교로 완성된 그의 짧은 생애는, 부르심에 응답하는 헌신이 무엇인지를 보여 주는 감동적인 이야기다. 개신교 순례자에게도 이곳은 젊은 날의 결단과 소명을 돌아보게 하는 자리다. 복원된 김가항 성당 모형 경당에서 출발해 신덕고개를 넘어 미리내성지까지 이어지는 '청년 김대건 길' 도보 순례가 유명하니, 한 구간이라도 걸어 보기를 권한다.
Euni Shrine — Gyeonggi Cheoin-gu
At Euni, a hidden village whose name means 'concealed hamlet,' the boy Kim Dae-geon was baptized in 1836 by the French missionary Fr. Maubant and chosen for seminary training; he later returned as Korea's first native priest to begin his ministry here. Founded by Catholics who had fled persecution into the hills, the village saw fifteen-year-old Kim, along with Choe Yang-eop and Choe Bang-je, set out on foot across the border and the Chinese mainland to study in Macau, thousands of li away. Enduring strange language, tropical disease, and long separation, he was ordained and returned to make Euni a base for his mission, only to be arrested in 1846 while scouting a route for missionaries and martyred at twenty-five. From a boy's baptism to a priest's martyrdom, his brief life is a stirring account of answering God's call — food for reflection on vocation for any pilgrim. The 'Young Kim Dae-geon Trail' from here over the hills to Mirinae is deservedly popular; walk even one stretch of it.
