은혜정원 (청라언덕 선교사 묘역)

대구 청라언덕에 조성된 초기 선교사와 그 가족들의 묘역으로, 대구·경북 선교에 생애를 바친 이들과 풍토병으로 어려서 세상을 떠난 어린 자녀들이 함께 잠들어 있다. 1890년대 말부터 이 언덕에 살며 교회를 세우고 제중원과 계성·신명학교를 일군 미국 북장로교 선교사들은, 사역의 열매만이 아니라 가장 아픈 상실까지 이 땅에 묻어야 했다. 의료 환경이 열악했던 시절 어린 자녀를 전염병으로 잃는 일이 드물지 않았고, 부모들은 아이를 언덕에 묻고도 사역지를 떠나지 않았다. '나는 죽어도 조선 땅에 묻히겠다'던 초기 선교사들의 고백처럼, 여러 선교사가 고향으로 돌아가는 대신 사역하던 땅에 묻히는 길을 택했다. 작은 아기 묘비들 앞에 서면 선교가 한 사람의 결단이 아니라 온 가족의 눈물과 희생 위에 세워졌음을 실감하게 된다. '은혜정원'이라는 이름은 이 모든 희생이 은혜에 대한 응답이었음을 말해 주는 듯하다. 청라언덕의 세 선교사 주택, 3·1운동 계단과 함께 대구 개신교 순례에서 가장 뭉클한 지점이니, 묘비에 새겨진 짧은 영문 비문들을 하나씩 읽으며 그 생애를 기려 보자.
Eunhye Garden Missionary Graves — Daegu Jung-gu
This small garden cemetery on Cheongna Hill holds the graves of early missionaries to the Daegu region and their families, including infant children lost to disease far from home. The Presbyterian missionaries who settled this hill from the late 1890s — founders of churches, the Jejungwon clinic, and the Keisung and Shinmyung schools — buried not only their labors but their deepest griefs in this soil, and parents who lost children did not abandon their calling. True to the early missionaries' resolve to be buried in Korea rather than return home, many rest in the land they served. The tiny headstones make plain that mission was the sacrifice of whole families; read the brief English epitaphs one by one — it is the most moving stop on the Cheongna Hill pilgrimage.
