Epworth Old Rectory — North Lincolnshire
Epworth Old Rectory is the childhood home of John and Charles Wesley, famous above all for the fire of 9 February 1709: the family escaped, but five-year-old John was left upstairs and, with the staircase gone, was pulled from a window by neighbours standing on one another's shoulders moments before the roof fell in. Wesley remembered it lifelong through the words 'Is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?' (Zech 3:2), convinced God had saved him for a purpose. Rebuilt in Queen Anne style after the blaze, the house preserves the rooms where Susanna Wesley methodically taught her children to read and believe, and where her Sunday-evening kitchen meetings drew more than two hundred villagers while her husband was away. John went on, after Aldersgate, to preach across Britain on horseback, and Charles to write thousands of hymns; Methodists worldwide visit as to the cradle of their movement — look for the room of John's rescue and Susanna's kitchen.
