에베소 고대도시

바울이 3차 전도여행 중 약 3년간 머물며 사역한 소아시아 최대 도시의 유적으로, 사도행전 19-20장의 주무대다. 그는 두란노 서원에서 두 해 동안 날마다 강론하여 '아시아에 사는 자는 유대인이나 헬라인이나 다 주의 말씀을 듣게' 되었고(행 19:10), 마술을 버린 회심자들이 불사른 책값이 은 오만이나 되었다(행 19:19). 복음이 흥왕하자 아르테미스 신상 모형을 팔던 은장색 데메드리오가 소동을 일으켰는데, 그 현장인 2만 5천 석 대극장이 지금도 웅장하게 남아 있다. 세계 7대 불가사의로 꼽히던 아르테미스 신전의 도시에서 복음이 우상 산업의 근간을 뒤흔든 것이다. 2세기 초에 세워진 셀수스 도서관의 2층 정면, 쿠레테스 대로, 모자이크와 프레스코가 고스란한 테라스 하우스 등 로마 도시의 일상이 놀랍도록 보존되어 2015년 유네스코 세계유산으로 지정되었다. 에베소는 바울이 '삼 년이나 밤낮 쉬지 않고 눈물로' 권한 교회이자(행 20:31) 에베소서의 수신지이며, 디모데가 목회하고(딤전 1:3) 사도 요한이 만년을 보냈다고 전해지는 곳이기도 하다. 계시록 일곱 교회 중 첫 교회로, 수고와 인내를 칭찬받았으나 '처음 사랑을 버렸다'는 책망도 받았다(계 2:1-7). 인근 셀축에는 요한의 무덤 전승지 위에 세워진 성 요한 바실리카 유적과 아르테미스 신전 터의 외로운 기둥 하나가 남아 있다. 대극장 객석에 앉아 사도행전 19장을 소리 내어 읽어 보면 2천 년 전의 함성과 복음의 능력이 함께 되살아난다.
Ephesus — Selçuk
Ephesus, the greatest city of Roman Asia, was Paul's base for some three years on his third journey; from the hall of Tyrannus he taught daily until 'all Asia heard the word of the Lord' (Acts 19:10), and converts burned their magic scrolls worth fifty thousand silver coins. The riot stirred up by Demetrius the silversmith erupted in the 25,000-seat theater that still dominates the site, in a city whose Temple of Artemis ranked among the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. The UNESCO-listed ruins preserve the Library of Celsus, Curetes Street, and the frescoed terrace houses in astonishing detail. This was the church Paul warned with tears for three years, the recipient of Ephesians, the flock of Timothy, and by tradition the home of the aged apostle John, whose basilica ruins stand in nearby Selçuk. It also heads the seven churches of Revelation, praised for endurance yet rebuked for leaving its first love. Sit in the theater and read Acts 19 aloud — few places make the New Testament world feel so immediate.
