말라가 영국인 묘지는 1831년에 문을 연 스페인 최초의 개신교(비가톨릭) 묘지입니다. 그 이전까지 스페인에서 개신교도는 축성된 땅에 묻힐 수 없어, 세상을 떠나면 한밤중에 해변 모래밭에 선 채로 파묻히곤 했습니다. 이내 파도에 시신이 다시 드러나는 참담한 광경을 지켜보던 영국 영사 윌리엄 마크의 끈질긴 노력으로, 마침내 이 정원 묘지가 마련되었습니다. 이곳은 신앙이 다르다는 이유로 죽어서까지 배척당한 오랜 역사와, 동시에 관용을 향해 조심스레 내디딘 첫걸음을 함께 증언합니다. 개신교의 관점에서는 억압과 소외의 기억이 서린 자리이지만, 그 안에는 이방 땅에서 이름 없이 스러진 이들에게 마침내 존엄한 안식의 자리가 주어졌다는 깊은 위로도 함께 깃들어 있습니다. 야자수와 부겐빌레아가 우거진 조용하고 아름다운 정원으로, 말라가 도심에서 걸어 닿을 수 있어 천천히 사색하며 둘러보기에 더없이 좋습니다. 비석 하나하나에 새겨진 낯선 이름들 앞에서, 다름을 이유로 배척당한 이들의 고단한 생애와 그들에게 마침내 허락된 안식을 함께 떠올려 보길 권합니다.
English Cemetery of Malaga — Andalusia (Malaga)
The English Cemetery of Malaga, opened in 1831, was the first Protestant (non-Catholic) cemetery in Spain. Until then, Protestants in Spain could not be buried in consecrated ground and were often interred upright in the beach sand at night, only for the waves to expose the bodies again. Moved by that grim sight, the British consul William Mark labored persistently until this garden cemetery was finally established. It bears witness both to the long history of those rejected even in death for believing differently, and to a first cautious step toward tolerance. For Protestants it is marked by the memory of repression and exclusion, yet within it also rests the comfort that those who perished nameless in a foreign land were at last given a place of dignified repose. A quiet, beautiful garden thick with palms and bougainvillea, it is walkable from central Malaga.
