갈멜 곶 기슭, 스텔라 마리스 수도원 아래에 자리한 이 동굴은 엘리야 예언자와 오래도록 결부되어 온 곳입니다. 전승은 엘리야가 바알 선지자들과의 대결을 전후하여, 또 이세벨 왕비의 살해 위협을 피해(왕상 18-19장) 이곳에 은신했다고 전합니다. 스텔라 마리스 아래쪽에 있는 별개의 하부 동굴로, 유대교·기독교·이슬람·드루즈 네 종교가 함께 공경하는 살아있는 순례지입니다. 유대인들은 이곳을 기도처로, 무슬림은 알카데르(엘 히드르)의 자리로 존중합니다. 성경은 엘리야가 절망과 탈진 가운데 광야로 도망쳤을 때 하나님이 세미한 음성으로 그를 다시 세우신 일을 전합니다. 정직히 말하면 이 동굴이 그 사건의 실제 장소라는 고고학적 확증은 없으나, 낙심한 종을 붙드시는 하나님을 기억하기에 좋은 곳입니다. 방문 팁: 신발을 벗는 유대교 관습을 존중하고, 조용히 기도하는 이들을 배려하십시오.
Elijah's Cave — Haifa
At the foot of the Carmel cape, below Stella Maris Monastery, this cave has long been associated with the prophet Elijah. Tradition holds that Elijah sheltered here around the time of his contest with the prophets of Baal and while fleeing Queen Jezebel's threat on his life (1 Kings 18-19). A separate lower cave from the monastery above, it is a living pilgrimage site venerated together by Jews, Christians, Muslims, and Druze; Jews keep it as a place of prayer and Muslims honor it as the seat of al-Khidr. Scripture recalls how, when Elijah fled exhausted and despairing into the wilderness, God restored him with a still, small voice. Honestly, there is no archaeological proof this cave is that exact place, yet it is a fitting spot to remember the God who upholds his discouraged servants. Tip: respect the Jewish custom of removing shoes and those praying quietly.
