El Escorial — Community of Madrid
At the foot of the Guadarrama mountains near Madrid stands a vast stone complex laid out with grid-like severity. Built by Philip II from 1563 to 1584, it unites monastery, palace, royal crypt, church, and an immense library, once kept by the Hieronymites. Its rigid symmetry symbolizes the dignity of Counter-Reformation Catholic Spain. Yet the same Philip II, through the Inquisition, brutally crushed the nascent Spanish Protestant communities in Seville and Valladolid and executed many believers. This grand monument to the Counter-Reformation is honestly also the shadow of an age that stamped out a budding Spanish Reformation. For Protestant pilgrims it recalls the danger of power fused with faith, and the witnesses of a suppressed belief. Tip: see Philip's plain bedroom, the royal pantheon, and the manuscript library hall.
