분문

구시가 남쪽에 있는 문으로, 통곡의 벽 광장과 성전산 무그라비 입구에 가장 가까워 그 두 곳을 방문할 때 대개 이 문으로 드나듭니다. 이름은 옛날 성 안의 쓰레기를 이 방향으로 힌놈 골짜기 쪽에 내다 버렸던 데서 유래하는데, 느헤미야가 예루살렘 성벽을 답사하고 재건할 때 언급한 '분문'(느 2:13; 3:13~14)과 이름이 이어집니다. 다만 성경 시대의 분문과 지금의 문은 위치가 서로 다르므로, 이름은 전승으로 이어졌으나 자리는 옮겨졌음을 알고 보는 것이 좋습니다. 현재의 문은 좁았던 것을 차량이 다닐 수 있도록 후대에 넓혔습니다. 통곡의 벽으로 가는 순례객과 차량이 몰려 보안 검색이 이루어지니, 여권과 소지품 검사에 대비해 여유 있게 이동하는 것이 좋습니다.
Dung Gate — Jerusalem
A gate on the Old City's south side, closest to the Western Wall plaza and the Mughrabi entrance to the Temple Mount, so pilgrims usually pass through it to reach both. Its name comes from the refuse once carried out this way toward the Hinnom Valley, echoing the Dung Gate that Nehemiah mentioned when he surveyed and rebuilt Jerusalem's wall (Neh 2:13; 3:13-14). It is worth knowing that the biblical Dung Gate stood in a different spot, so the name carried over while the location shifted. The present gate, once narrow, was later widened for vehicles. Security screening handles the crowds heading to the Western Wall, so allow extra time.
