익산 두동교회
익산 두동교회는 1929년에 지어진 ㄱ자형 한옥 예배당으로, 남녀가 서로 마주 보지 않도록 두 날개에서 따로 예배드리던 시대의 산물이다. 유교적 남녀유별의 관습이 강하던 시골에서 온 가족이 한 지붕 아래 함께 예배할 수 있도록, 강단을 두 날개가 만나는 꼭짓점에 두고 남자석과 여자석을 각각의 날개에 배치한 지혜로운 구조를 취했다. 이렇게 하면 남녀는 서로를 보지 못하지만 설교자는 양쪽을 모두 볼 수 있어, 복음이 전통 문화와 정면으로 부딪히기보다 그 안으로 슬기롭게 파고든 초기 한국교회 토착화의 산 증거가 된다. 김제 금산교회와 함께 국내에 단 둘뿐인 현존 ㄱ자 교회로, 전북 지역의 소중한 문화재로 지정되어 보존되고 있다. 흙벽과 목조 기둥, 기와지붕으로 이루어진 소박한 예배당은 화려함 없이도 신앙의 진정성을 담아내며, 백여 년 세월의 결이 그대로 배어 있다. 이곳에 모였던 초기 시골 신자들은 배움이 짧고 가진 것이 적었지만, 새 신앙을 받아들이며 낡은 벽을 조금씩 허물어 갔다. 개신교 순례자에게 두동교회는 복음이 어떻게 낮은 자리의 사람들 사이에서 문화의 담을 넘어섰는지를 보여주는 귀한 예배당이다. 강단이 놓인 두 날개의 꼭짓점에 서서 남녀 어느 쪽에서도 설교자가 보이는 그 배치를 직접 확인해 보라.
Dudong Church — Jeonbuk Iksan-si
Built in 1929, Dudong Church is one of only two surviving L-shaped hanok churches in Korea (with Geumsan Church), designed so that men and women could worship in separate wings without seeing each other. The pulpit sits at the corner where the two wings meet, so it served both congregations at once — the gospel entering deeply held Korean custom with wisdom rather than confrontation. Its earthen walls, timber posts, and tiled roof carry the grain of a century, holding real faith without any ornament. The humble villagers who gathered here had little schooling and few possessions, yet in embracing a new faith they slowly dismantled old walls. Stand at the angle of the L, where the preacher is visible from both sides, to appreciate the ingenuity.
