동은의학박물관

연세대학교 의과대학 캠퍼스에 자리한 의학박물관으로, 1885년 제중원에서 시작해 세브란스병원으로 이어진 한국 의료선교 130여 년의 역사를 담고 있다. 알렌과 헤론, 에비슨 등 의료선교사들의 유물과 초기 의료기기, 옛 진료 기록과 사진, 한국 최초 면허 의사들의 자료 등 한국 근대의학의 귀중한 사료들을 소장·전시한다. 전시가 들려주는 이야기 가운데 백미는 에비슨이 백정 출신 박서양을 의학생으로 받아들여 의사로 길러 낸 일이다. 백정의 아들이 1908년 세브란스의학교 첫 졸업생 일곱 명 가운데 하나로 의사가 되어 후학을 가르치고 훗날 만주에서 독립운동과 의료 활동에 헌신했으니, 복음이 신분의 벽을 넘어 한 사람을 온전히 세운 역사가 여기 있다. 세브란스라는 이름 자체도 미국의 실업가 세브란스가 '받는 기쁨보다 주는 기쁨이 더 크다'며 병원 건립 기금을 내놓은 데서 왔다. 의술을 통로로 삼은 복음 전파가 어떻게 한 나라의 의학과 교육을 일으켰는지 확인할 수 있는 곳이다. 제중원 초기 진료 기록과 한국인 첫 의사들의 졸업 사진을 눈여겨보며, 광혜원 복원 건물과 함께 둘러보기를 권한다.
Dongeun Medical Museum — Seoul Seodaemun-gu
This medical museum on the Yonsei University medical campus preserves 130 years of Korean medical mission history, from Jejungwon's founding in 1885 through Severance Hospital, with the effects of missionaries like Allen, Heron, and Avison, early instruments, and records of Korea's first licensed physicians. Its finest story is that of Park Seo-yang, a butcher's son whom Avison trained as a doctor: one of the seven graduates of Severance's first medical class in 1908, he went on to teach medicine and later served Korean independence and medical work in Manchuria — the gospel breaking caste barriers to raise up a whole person. The hospital's very name honors Louis Severance, the American businessman who funded it saying the joy of giving outweighs the joy of receiving. Pair the visit with the reconstructed Gwanghyewon building nearby.
