주님 눈물 교회

감람산 서쪽 비탈에 자리한 이 작은 교회는 종려주일에 예수님이 예루살렘 성을 바라보며 우신 사건(눅 19:41-44)을 기념한다. '가까이 오사 성을 보시고 우시며'라는 말씀 그대로, 성을 향한 주님의 눈물이 이곳의 주제다. 라틴어 이름 도미누스 플레비트는 '주님이 우셨다'는 뜻이다. 예수님은 이 자리에서 예루살렘의 멸망을 내다보시며 '너도 오늘 평화에 관한 일을 알았더라면' 하고 탄식하셨다(눅 19:42). 건축가 안토니오 바를루치가 1953년부터 1955년 사이에 지었는데, 지붕 네 모서리에 눈물을 담는 병을 얹어 건물 전체를 하나의 눈물방울처럼 형상화했다. 이 교회의 백미는 제단 뒤편 창이다. 십자가 너머로 기드론 골짜기 건너 예루살렘 구시가와 성전산, 황금 돔이 한눈에 들어오는데, 예수님이 우시며 바라보셨을 바로 그 방향의 조망으로 복음서 서사 전체에서 손꼽히는 장면이다. 공사 중에는 제2성전기와 비잔틴 시대의 무덤들이 발굴되어 함께 보존되어 있어, 이 언덕이 수천 년간 예루살렘 사람들의 안식처였음을 말해 준다. 방문할 때는 창 앞에 서서 예수님의 눈물이 심판이 아니라 사랑에서 나왔음을 묵상하고, 오늘 우리의 도시를 향한 주님의 마음을 헤아려 보자.
Dominus Flevit Church — Jerusalem
On the western slope of the Mount of Olives, this small church remembers the moment Jesus wept over Jerusalem on Palm Sunday (Luke 19:41-44) — 'as he approached and saw the city, he wept over it.' Its Latin name, Dominus Flevit, means 'the Lord wept.' Built by Antonio Barluzzi between 1953 and 1955, it is shaped like a single teardrop, with tear vessels at the four corners of its roof. Its glory is the window behind the altar: beyond the cross, across the Kidron Valley, the Old City and Temple Mount fill the view in the very direction Jesus wept over — one of the finest vistas in the Gospel story. Second Temple and Byzantine tombs unearthed during construction are preserved here. Stand at the window and ponder that his tears flowed from love, not judgment.
