당고개순교성지

1839년 기해박해의 마지막 무렵, 이성례 마리아를 비롯한 신자 열 명이 순교한 곳으로 용산 신계동 언덕에 성지가 조성되어 있다. 연말 대목장을 앞두고 상인들이 서소문 밖 처형장 대신 장소를 옮겨 달라 청원하여 처형장이 이곳 당고개로 옮겨졌다고 전해지니, 세밑의 흥청거림 곁에서 열 명의 신자가 조용히 신앙을 증언하고 떠난 셈이다. 이들 가운데 아홉 명은 1984년 성인의 반열에 올랐고, 이성례 마리아는 2014년 시복되었다. 이성례는 성인 최경환의 아내이자 한국의 두 번째 사제가 되는 최양업 신부의 어머니로, 옥중에서 젖먹이 막내를 굶겨 잃는 고통까지 겪으면서도 끝내 믿음을 지켰다. 처형장으로 끌려가며 어린 자녀들에게 남겼다고 전해지는 당부는, 어머니의 사랑과 신앙의 절개가 하나로 새겨진 애절한 증언으로 전해 내려온다. 가족을 두고도 그리스도를 택한 이들의 결단은 '아들이나 딸을 나보다 더 사랑하는 자는 내게 합당하지 아니하며'라는 말씀을 깊이 묵상하게 한다. 지금 성지에는 아기 예수를 안은 성모상과 기념 경당, 순교자들을 기리는 조형물이 아담하게 자리해 있다. 도심 속의 작은 성지이지만, 어머니 순교자들의 이야기가 주는 울림은 결코 작지 않으니 조용히 머물며 그 믿음을 기려 보자.
Danggogae Martyrs' Shrine — Seoul Yongsan-gu
At Danggogae in Yongsan, ten believers were martyred in the closing days of the 1839 persecution — the execution ground moved here, tradition says, at the request of merchants preparing for the year-end market at Seosomun. Nine of the ten were canonized in 1984, and Maria Yi Seong-rye was beatified in 2014. Wife of St. Choe Gyeong-hwan and mother of Choe Yang-eop, who would become Korea's second priest, she endured even the death of her nursing infant in prison, yet held to her faith, and the words she is said to have left her children on the way to execution remain a heartrending testimony of a mother's love bound to unbending faith. The small shrine with its memorial chapel and statue of Mary holding the child Jesus honors these witnesses with quiet tenderness.
