수피아여학교 커티스메모리얼홀

1925년 수피아여학교 교정에 세워진 소예배당으로, 선교사들이 예배 처소로 쓰던 아담한 벽돌 건물이다. 스테인드글라스와 목조 트러스 천장이 원형대로 남아 있어 국가등록문화재로 지정되었으며, 광주에 남은 근대 예배당 건축 가운데서도 보존 상태가 뛰어나다. 회색과 붉은 벽돌을 섞어 쌓은 외벽과 뾰족한 아치 창은 작은 규모에도 예배당다운 품격을 갖추었고, 안으로 들어서면 백 년 전의 목조 천장이 그대로 머리 위에 펼쳐진다. 학교 안에 예배당을 먼저 두었던 선교사들의 뜻은, 교육의 중심에 예배가 있어야 한다는 기독교 학교의 본질을 말해 준다. 이 작은 예배당에서 선교사들은 주일마다 모여 말씀과 성찬으로 힘을 얻고, 다시 학교와 병원과 전도의 현장으로 흩어져 나갔다. 화려함이 아니라 경건함이 공간을 채우는 것임을 이 예배당은 조용히 보여 준다. 광주 근대 기독교 유산 가운데 숨은 보석 같은 곳이니, 수피아홀과 함께 꼭 들러 보라. 오후 햇살이 스테인드글라스를 통과해 내부를 물들이는 시간에 맞춰 방문해, 잠시 앉아 기도하는 시간을 가져 보기를 권한다.
Curtis Memorial Hall — Jeonnam Nam-gu
Built in 1925 on the Speer School campus, this small brick chapel served the missionaries as their place of worship, and its stained glass and timber-truss ceiling survive in original condition as registered national heritage — among the best-preserved early chapels in Gwangju. Its mixed gray and red brickwork and pointed arch windows give the modest building real dignity, and stepping inside puts a century-old wooden ceiling directly overhead. Placing a chapel at the heart of the school expressed the missionaries' conviction that worship belongs at the center of education; here they gathered each Lord's Day before scattering again to school, hospital, and evangelism. Visit with Speer Hall, ideally in the afternoon when sunlight through the stained glass colors the intimate interior.
