Cruz de Ferro (Iron Cross) — El Bierzo
The Cruz de Ferro stands near Foncebadón at the highest point of the Camino Francés (about 1,504 m). It is only a simple wooden pole some 5 m tall crowned by a small iron cross, but at its foot lies a vast mound of stones. Pilgrims keep the old tradition of laying down a stone brought from home, a symbol of setting one's sin and heavy burden at the foot of the cross. The custom of raising cairns itself is thought to derive from Roman milestones or Celtic highland rites (tradition). The cross on-site is a replica; the original is kept in the Astorga museum (fact). For Protestant pilgrims this is among the deepest spiritual moments of the whole Camino. At Christ's call, 'Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden' (Matt 11:28), pour your guilt, wounds, and worry into a single stone and lay it down. Tip: dawn is quietest and most meaningful; bring your stone in advance.
