콜로세움은 베스파시아누스 황제가 착공하여 그의 아들 티투스 때인 서기 80년 완공된 로마 최대의 원형경기장(플라비우스 원형극장)으로, 5만 명이 넘는 관중 앞에서 검투 경기와 맹수 사냥, 처형이 벌어지던 곳이다. 초대교회 그리스도인들이 이곳에서 맹수형 등으로 순교했다는 전승이 오래 전해져 순교 기념지로 기려져 왔으며, 안디옥의 감독 이그나티우스가 로마로 압송되어 맹수에게 순교했다는 2세기 초의 전승도 이와 얽혀 있다. 개별 사건의 역사적 세부는 확정하기 어렵지만, 로마 제국의 박해 아래 원형경기장들에서 수많은 신자가 목숨을 잃은 것은 분명한 역사다. 18세기에 교황 베네딕토 14세는 이곳을 순교자들의 피로 거룩해진 곳으로 선포하여 보존의 길을 열었고, 경기장 안에는 순교자들을 기리는 십자가가 서 있다. 해마다 성금요일 밤이면 교황이 인도하는 '십자가의 길' 기도가 이곳에서 드려져, 제국의 오락 시설이 십자가를 기억하는 자리로 바뀐 역설을 보여준다. 이그나티우스가 순교를 앞두고 로마 교회에 보낸 편지의 '나는 하나님의 밀알이니'라는 고백은 이 아레나의 모래를 새로운 눈으로 보게 한다. 아레나를 내려다보며 '몸은 죽여도 영혼은 능히 죽이지 못하는 자들을 두려워하지 말라'(마 10:28)는 말씀을 묵상해 보자.
Colosseum — Rome
Begun under Vespasian and completed by Titus in AD 80, the Colosseum — the Flavian Amphitheater — seated more than fifty thousand spectators for gladiatorial games, beast hunts, and executions. Long tradition honors it as a place where early Christians died for their faith, a memory entwined with the story of Ignatius of Antioch, brought to Rome to face the beasts around the early second century; while individual details are hard to verify, the martyrdom of many believers in Roman amphitheaters is beyond doubt. In the eighteenth century Pope Benedict XIV declared the site hallowed by the martyrs' blood, a cross now stands in the arena, and the Pope leads the Good Friday Way of the Cross here each year — an imperial pleasure ground turned into a memorial of the cross. Looking down into the arena, one recalls Ignatius' words, 'I am God's wheat,' and the Lord's own: do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul (Matt 10:28).
