골로새

골로새는 바울이 옥중에서 골로새서를 써 보낸 교회가 있던 리쿠스 계곡의 도시로, 오늘날 터키 호나즈 인근에 아직 본격 발굴되지 않은 텔(유적 언덕)로 조용히 남아 있다. 흥미롭게도 바울은 이 교회를 직접 방문한 적이 없다. 골로새 교회는 바울의 동역자 에바브라의 전도로 세워진 것으로 보이며(골 1:7), 바울은 편지에서 자신이 그들의 얼굴을 보지 못했음을 언급한다. 이 도시는 또한 도망친 종 오네시모를 그 주인 빌레몬에게 돌려보내며 형제로 받아 달라 청한 짧고 아름다운 편지, 빌레몬서의 무대이기도 하다. 한때 라오디게아·히에라볼리와 함께 세 도시를 이루며 번영했던 골로새는 1세기의 지진 이후 점차 쇠락해 이웃 도시들에 그늘을 내주었다. 그러나 이 작고 알려지지 않은 도시의 교회에 보내진 편지가 담은 것은 결코 작지 않았다. '그는 보이지 아니하는 하나님의 형상이시요 모든 피조물보다 먼저 나신 이시니… 만물이 그 안에 함께 섰느니라'(골 1:15-17)는 저 위대한 그리스도 찬가가 바로 이 교회를 위한 것이었다. 화려한 유적은 없으나, 바로 그 점이 이곳의 메시지다. 고요한 텔 위에 앉아 골로새서 1장을 소리 내어 읽으면, 작은 교회에 맡겨진 크신 그리스도의 무게가 사무치게 다가온다.
Colossae — Honaz
Colossae, in the Lycus valley near modern Honaz in Turkey, is the city of the church to which Paul, in prison, sent the letter to the Colossians — today a quiet, still largely unexcavated mound. Strikingly, Paul had never visited this church; it appears to have been founded through his coworker Epaphras (Col 1:7), and in the letter Paul notes that he had not seen their faces. This city is also the setting of the short and lovely letter to Philemon, sent with the runaway slave Onesimus and pleading that his master receive him as a brother. Once prosperous alongside Laodicea and Hierapolis, Colossae declined after a first-century earthquake and gave way to its neighbors. Yet what was entrusted to this small, obscure city's church was anything but small: the soaring hymn of Christ — 'He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation... in him all things hold together' (Col 1:15-17) — was written for this very congregation. There are no grand ruins, and that is precisely the point. Sit on the quiet tel and read Colossians 1 aloud, and the weight of a great Christ entrusted to a little church settles deep within.
