산타 마리아 도 사르 참사회 성당

산티아고 시내 남쪽, 사르 강가에 자리한 산타 마리아 도 사르 참사회 성당은 대성당의 인파에서 벗어난 12세기 로마네스크의 숨은 보석이다. 겉모습은 소박하지만, 안으로 들어서면 누구나 저도 모르게 걸음을 멈추게 된다. 지반 침하와 구조적 문제로 육중한 기둥과 벽이 눈에 띄게 안쪽으로 기울어 있어, 마치 건물 전체가 지금이라도 무너져 내릴 듯한 아찔한 감각을 준다. 이 위태로움을 지탱하기 위해 후대에 거대한 버팀벽(부벽)이 바깥에 덧대어졌고, 그 덕에 성당은 900년 가까운 세월을 무너지지 않고 자리를 지켜 왔다. 딸린 로마네스크 회랑의 기둥머리 조각도 섬세하여 볼거리를 더한다. 기울어진 채로도 끝내 무너지지 않는 이 성당은, 흔들리는 날이 있어도 결국 서 있는 신앙의 견고함을 돌로써 순례자에게 보여 준다. 완주의 감격이 지나간 뒤에도, 흔들리지 않는 나라를 소망하며 계속 서 있는 것이 신앙임을 조용히 일깨우는 자리다. 방문 팁: 대성당에서 걸어 20분 남짓 거리이고 개방 시간이 짧으니 미리 확인하며, 기둥의 기울기는 성당 안쪽 측랑 통로에서 가장 뚜렷이 체감된다.
Collegiate Church of Santa María a Real do Sar — Galicia (A Coruña)
South of Santiago's center, by the river Sar, the Collegiate Church of Santa María do Sar is a hidden 12th-century Romanesque gem away from the cathedral crowds. Plain outside, it stops everyone who steps in: through ground subsidence and structural strain, its massive columns and walls lean visibly inward, giving the dizzying sense that the whole building might collapse at any moment. To hold this precariousness, huge buttresses were later added outside, and thanks to them the church has stood unfallen for nearly 900 years. Its Romanesque cloister capitals are finely carved too, adding to the visit. Leaning yet finally unfallen, it shows the pilgrim in stone the sturdiness of a faith that keeps standing though it has its swaying days. Even after the joy of finishing has passed, it quietly recalls that faith is to keep standing in hope of a kingdom that cannot be shaken. Tip: about a 20-minute walk from the cathedral, with short opening hours, so check ahead; the lean of the columns is felt most clearly from the side aisles inside.
