Churches of San Lorenzo and San Tirso — León
The churches of San Tirso (12th c.) and San Lorenzo (13th c.) in Sahagún are landmark works of Spanish brick Mudéjar-Romanesque. Where stone was scarce on the Meseta, artisans trained in Islamic brickwork rendered Romanesque forms in red brick, a meeting of Christian and Muslim craft. Their layered bell towers and blind arcaded apses are distinctive. Sahagún once held the largest and most powerful royal monastery of San Benito (Cluniac Benedictine) on the Iberian Peninsula, a hub of the pilgrim route, of which only ruins now remain. For Protestant pilgrims it reflects how different cultures can meet creatively, not only in enmity, and how fleeting earthly glory proves. Tip: a short walk links the San Lorenzo tower and San Tirso; see the old monastery arch too.
