아부 고쉬 부활 교회 (십자군)

아부 고쉬의 부활 교회는 1140~1141년경 세워진, 성지에서 가장 잘 보존된 십자군 교회 가운데 하나다. 두껍고 견고한 로마네스크 석조 건물 안에는 빛바랜 비잔틴풍 프레스코가 남아, 800여 년 전 예배 공간의 분위기를 고스란히 전한다. 십자군은 이 마을을 복음서의 엠마오로 여겨 라틴어로 '카스텔룸 엠마우스'라 불렀고, 그래서 이곳에 부활을 기념하는 교회를 세웠다. 교회는 로마 시대의 샘과 저수조 위에 지어졌는데, 지금도 지하에서 물소리를 들을 수 있다. 오늘날 이 건물은 베네딕도회가 관리하는 부활의 성 마리아 수도원으로, 수도자들의 기도와 성가가 이어진다. 다만 아부 고쉬가 실제 엠마오였다는 것은 여러 전승 중 하나일 뿐 확정된 사실이 아니다. 개신교 순례자에게 이곳은 화려함이 아니라 단순하고 묵직한 공간의 고요함이 인상적이며, 부활하신 주님이 떡을 떼며 자신을 알리신 저녁을 조용히 되새기기 좋다. 좁은 창으로 스며드는 빛과 낡은 프레스코가 순례자의 마음을 차분하게 가라앉힌다. 방문 시 수도원의 침묵과 기도 시간을 존중하도록 한다.

The Church of the Resurrection at Abu Ghosh, built around 1140-1141, is one of the best-preserved Crusader churches in the Holy Land. Within its thick, sturdy Romanesque stone survive faded Byzantine-style frescoes that still carry the atmosphere of worship from eight centuries ago. The Crusaders took this village for the Gospel Emmaus, calling it 'Castellum Emmaus,' and raised here a church of the resurrection. It stands over a Roman-era spring and cistern; water can still be heard below. Today it is the Benedictine Monastery of Saint Mary of the Resurrection, alive with the monks' prayer and chant. That Abu Ghosh was the true Emmaus is one tradition, not settled fact. Its power is not splendor but a grave, simple stillness fit for recalling the supper where the risen Lord was known.
